Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra ID

Hi All,

Has anybody seen a similar paint scheme to this Eddy? I don't have a lot of details, but it is Columbus SLX, looks to be a Athena gruppo, carbon fork, although a EM steel forks is available as well.

Does anybody know the year of this frame? i haven't seen anything with a similar paint scheme online. Also what would you put the value, the bike is a rider, not pristine.
thanks.

Based on top tube cable guide locations (looks like side entry, side exit) I would say '94 or perhaps a little later.

Find the serial number on the BB and try to decode it on the Cadre Merckx serial number page:

It's hard to see, but my monitor is pretty good, but the cable doesn't enter the top tube. It uses two of the cable stops similar to the one at the rear derailleur. I have only seen photos of two other Merckx frames like this, so it's fairly rare. I would guess it's a little older too, maybe mid to late 80's.
A shame it doesn't have the original fork, but they do come up for sale occasionally. I wouldn't pay more than $600 for that bike as it sits.

Looks like a team frame. There's a number holder, plus the paint looks like it could be a Euro team of sorts. The brake brazeons on the top tube make me think it's a mid 90s era frame.

Aha, another picture posted that shows the drive side. Had a bunch of merckx frames pass through my hands, but never seen one with split top tube cable stops like that. Possibly a frame mod with a repaint?

I agree. Either inside the top tube or along the top with 3 guides..for the steel Merckx's. Repair or maybe not a Merckx? EM on the seat stay tops or rear brake bridge?

I had a mid 90s Corsa Motorola with the split top tube cable guides. Hadn't been repainted or repaired. Never seen them on a Corsa Extra, but the Merckx factory was never known for its consistency.

I agree with DBH. Serial sounds right to be a Merckx, and well, yes, consistency, not that.

it has EM engravings

Yes the seat stay caps and brake bridge have the proper engravings. I will try to get some pictures.

Maybe it could be useful to someone...
B6809 = 1989, then a new top tube cable guide location was introduced (there were 3 others). Corsa Extra, repainted?

based on the frame details and with those cable guides and the number hanger and if they are originals I'm going to guess it was probably made for some team in the early 90's.

Cable guides and number hanger are only publicly available extra chargeable options. No professional team orders frames one year in advance; in the early 90's Corsa Extra SLX was no longer the best EM model (CE MAX and CE TSX already existed). This could have been a frame built for the professional 1990 season (such slides on top tube were used by the Weinmann team), unfortunately there is no evidence of this.
