Brake release issues

Recently converted an older bike to 650b, which required using long reach brakes. Caliper brakes but without a release lever. My only option to remove wheels seems to be to deflate and re-inflate tires. Any workarounds or alternative ideas?

Don't mean to sound snarky, but buy calipers that have a release. Should be fairly common.

Remember seeing something for cantis time ago but cant remember where or the name It was like an online release oh... now I remember in the cantis there is like a line that connects the two arms the one you attach to the central pulling cable, is not what are you looking for but there must be something besides brake lever with release...

And just remember that i have a set of Cane creek silver brake levers moving around, which I can sell to you for 25 bucks, used them once and had been in my bin for a while.

Ones shown plus there are levers out there with the QR in the lever, if you are a non lever mounted shifting kinda guy..Tektro makes some.

I have some levers that Riv used to sell that allow very wide opening because the release is a like a stirrup that connects the pivot side of the lever to the bit that anchors the cable. The design requires exposed brake cables. If that sounds like something you might want to buy I can dig them out of my stash and send you pix/info.

Tektro 559's paired with their own brake levers with an additional lever release should do the trick.

Worst case, loosen the cable fixing bolt and allow the caliper to open all the way. Better than deflating and reinflating the tire for removal and mounting.

I would distinctly NOT recommend doing this. Every time you clamp the cable (basically mashing it between two plates), you risk damaging it. And a damaged brake cable is something to avoid. Not to mention, you'd likely have to readjust the brake each time you re-clamp the brake the cable. Better to use some of the QR solutions already offered, and in the worst case, partially deflate the tire, rather than loosing and re-clamping the brake cable each time.

1) Note my clarification of 'worst case'.
2) Unless the OP is inserting and removing the wheel on a regular basis, an occasional mashing of the cable by the fixing bolt is not going to unduly damage the cable itself.
3) If the OP needs an identification of where to emplace the cable vis-a-vis the fixing bolt other than the aforementioned mashed area, a mark with a Sharpie would do the trick.

Agreed, however, that in a perfect world of everything doing exactly as we would wish it to, a combination of caliper release and lever release would open the caliper enough to extract and reinstall the wheel.

You could also get a pair of cable splitters like they sell for S&S coupled bikes. Oops, probably won't work for the front brake
