Chorus 11 left shifter: cable ripping through nipple hole?
While I adjusted the FD on a new build, at some point it felt like the cable slipped when I shifted to the big ring.
Initially I thought I might not have tightened the screw at the FD enough. Not the case. When I tried to down shift, everything seemed to be stuck. Tried a few more times and after some resistance, I was eventually able to get it moving again. Looking at the nipple inside the shifter, it appeared the cable ripped through the bottom of the disk that turns up and pulls the cable. Removed the cable, and it is all buckled right down from the nipple. Thought maybe the nipple was too big, but it measures 4mm. Is this a know/common issue??? I assume those Chorus 11 shifters can be overhauled like the older 10s? |

I'm not sure that I understand the failure that you described. However the cable end looks a little too large.
If the OP responds he'll be aware spare parts availability.

We can't see what the cable end interacted with, if it's damaged, but have you tried to install a new cable?
It seems as though the cable head was installed into the shifter incorrectly, such that it didn't support the cable's tensile load in the normal way. Use a pen-light to verify that the cable is engaging the cable head support (spool), and is fully seated in it. Most Campag-compatible cables seem to have the letter C or CC embossed into the head. |

To me looks like the cable head got off the cable spooler and got caught inside of the lever.
From what I read and from what I could understand the op says the cable head pretty much ripped trough the cable spooler? is that even possible? IMO the cable got off and got trapped between the cable spooler and the lever. As for the shape of the head, weird... if you use a non campy cable it wont fit in the cable spooler, if that was the case the nipple or head needs to be dremel down or filed to fit the cable spooler, or the head will get stuck in the cable spooler hole or if not tension enough in the cable the head will get off the cable spooler causing something like what the op is having. |

Mine ripped the head off the cable last year and that was with the original Campy cable. Figured it was just one of those things.

The hole in the take up spool is a hole, not a slot so I don't see how the cable head could come out unless the spool broke/split..never seen that. I wonder if you ever had the cable head into/thru the hole in the spool but hard to say w/o seeing the lever. I can take these apart and fix if anything is broken..I have 11s/Gumby/10s spare parts. This is the right but the left is the same idea, spool wise. It is sometimes tough to get the cable thru the hole of the spool when the lever is on the handlebar..I'm guessing you just missed, the hole.

I see in WTB/classidieds, you are looking for a RH lever/parts/body..what is broken?
PM sent..I have a new body or shift assembly...your choice. Maybe just the spool??

Thanks all for the responses and sorry if my description was not very clear...

Inserted the cable again (left pic) then I shifted "up" (right pic). Cable was brand new, nipple exact same size as the old on. |

Well, today my rear Chorus 11s shifter cable snapped about 12 miles into a ride. I should have known as shifting needed a bit of tweaking recently. That was surely a clue I needed to check the cable. Getting the head out was quite the chore. I really need to get in the habit of changing out the cables every two years or so. This was the stock cable so it was 6 years old! Still, never...ever broke any cables, in over 40 years of riding, until Campy 11s.
Getting up the hills in a 34/12 was no fun! Tim |

BUT, at least it can't get 'lost' inside the shift guts...
