Here’s another Gunnar Crosshairs with mini-motos and 39mm tires. This is also my road bike with GP5000s on another wheelset. Lots of nice bikes on this thread!

Has anyone bought a 700c rim for bikes like this (bigger tires) recently? I know if I order a Velocity a23, it will show up eventually. Are there other options that fit a tire that size?

I’m a big fan of the Kinlin XR-26T. I have a set on my gravel bike running Gravel King SK tires. The nominal 35mm tires measure 38mm on the Kinlin rims at 38-40 PSI. The rims have held up well to gravel riding and racing.

Fortunately, it was built with more 'road-geo' with low bb shell/more BB drop than most 'cross bikes. This makes it more conducive for gravel riding. Since I registered for this year's D2R2 160K, I needed to ensure the bike had the appropriate gearing, so I recently swapped the standard SRAM Red crank (Zanconato 38/46T chainrings) for a compact Red crank (34/50T chainrings), swapped out the short cage Red RD for a medium cage, swapped out the SRAM PG-1070 12/26T (or DA7800 12/27T) cassette for a SRAM PG-1050 11/32T and purchased a new SRAM 1091R chain. For tires, I purchased a pair of Rivendell Jack Brown Greens (33.3). It performed flawlessly, save for my rear Mavic Ksyrium ES' freehub bushing issues (which has since been addressed)!

Now I've decided to make some further mods to really solidify this as my gravel bike. They include replacing the front Paul Neo-Retro silver cantilever with a black MiniMoto, swapping out the rear Touring silver cantilever with a black Touring (plus Moon Unit and new Kool-Stop salmon pads). I also swapped out the Crank Brothers' Egg Beaters for XTR pedals. Unfortunately, I had the bike built with only one (1) water bottle cage mount but I think I'm going to purchase that riveting tool and kindly ask my good wrench friend to add (at least) another mount. Regarding tires, I'm interested to see if the bike can accommodate 38C's - something like the Rene Herse Barlow Pass. Fun!

I'll see if I have a recent pic...
I had 40mm Gravel Kings on tubeless HED Belgium + wheels in mine... plenty of room up front but a little close out back.

Dang, that's almost too purty to ride.

Another Guru.
Not too racy, it's been relegated to a rain/bad road/trail bike.
Seen taking a break at MOD Pizza.

This Cross frameset is getting lots and lots o' miles lately.

Can run up to a 36 mm tire on this, but those generously sized Schwalbes (marked 28, but measure 30 mm) are surprisingly effective on mixed pavement rides and have been very durable.

I’ve found that “true” cross bikes with really high BBs (>65) tend to be “twitchy” on steeper paved descents.

Sometimes, but "it depends", BB drop is only one design dimension. Front/center, trail, chainstay length, and of course fit to a given rider are others. My Ritchey has a BB drop of 65mm +/- and it does fine in the Berkley Hills, better (i.e., more predictable and stable) than a couple of my "traditional" old school Italian, CONI-fitted road bikes in fact. I dunno why, too many variables to suss out and I'm not a builder/fitter, but it does surprisingly well, even with canti's!

Can’t say that’s been true with my Goodrich or Moots Psychlo-X… but as ‘zennmotion’ aptly points out, there’s a lot more to bike geo than BB drop.

Love it!

What crankset/ring combo are you running there?
