Compass UD1 rack

72 hta, 50 offset, 650x50 gives 60 trail

The bike handles nicely with this bag close to the head tube - no floppiness, easy to ride no-handed. I picked up dinner groceries…maybe 5 pounds plus my lock, repair kit, other sundries…all good. The front saddle bag is a nice shape for fitting things and it’s easy to carry off-bike. The 46cm hbars are wide enough to wrap around this bag.

On this bike, I probably wouldn’t do a basket that carries a load further forward or large/heavy boxy bag.

Gotcha. Did you consider a porteur rack at all? Just curious.

Might try to get my fork crown drilled... TBD.

No.
The bag is mainly supported by the handlebar attachment. The rack serves only to keep the bag clear of the tire and the head tube - so it’s compact design is ideal here.

I had a porteur on another bike and it earned its keep only when carrying a big load (rare). Otherwise it’s a heavy piece of jewelry.

These guys are forging bikes out of fire and steel pee paw…. You should get one!

Yes! They are VO Smooth 58s. They come predrilled for the stay attachments which is helpful.

I like VO’s because they are much sturdier and stiffer than Honjos of the same width. However, I actually dislike the fact that they are pre-drilled because I detest eyebolts, especially at the front because they eat into toe clearance. To use my preferred u-brackets, I have to drill a pair of holes perpendicular to VO’s holes, which isn’t ideal.

Lovely bike, though!

That is a good point! I wonder why VO doesn’t use the u brackets.

Do you have a photo you could post of those mounted up?
I just ordered a pair of Planet Bike Cascadia ALX (PSA - fenders on sale at Ascent Cycles) because my one experience with metal fenders mounting hardware and toe clearance (and pebble clearance inside) wasn't awesome.

Oh that's awesome Good to know they fit 58mm tires - I might have to spring for the silver ones on my G-road as they just came in stock on VO's site.

Do you find them relatively easy to remove as well?

Beautiful ride Steve.

How do you decide if you ride your Firefly with the beefy 55mm tires versus the Broad?

I set up the G Road with 700x35 slicks the other day. It totally changes the feel of the bike and works well with the mid-trail front end geometry. So that’s what I’m riding on the road lately. It’s fun having different bikes that can take different wheels and tires.
