Haha yeh. That’s what I wrote back to him, and he immediately dropped the price to $50 shipped 😂

thanks to everyone who reported this person. man, he was busy in about the 20 hours he was a member here.

stay vigilant and definitely report these scumbags.

Keith tries very hard and diligently to screen these dopes out, but sometimes one sneaks through. He also reports a very big increase in the volume of known scammers trying to join the forum.

maybe these types are trying to take advantage of the current world situation somehow?

anyway, be smart and keep your eyes open.

cheers!

The part that's baffling is a) what a niche scam and b) the effort required for so little reward, maybe $100 on a home run.

I reported this guy as well but didn’t see this thread until now.

I’ve never been scammed as I can usually pick them out easily. But this one almost got me. “David Peterson’s” first email seemed ok, with a nice picture of a bag I was looking for. Second email set off alarms and glad I asked some follow up questions only bike enthusiasts (ok...nerds) would know. He avoided the questions and asked for confirmation of the payment.

I let my guard down being that this is Paceline. Gotta stick to my rule of not dealing with anyone with no or low forum posts.

I know mods try to do what they can. Appreciate the work being done there.

I wonder if disabling PM’s for new members would be a good preventative measure.

Another one here. The "extra cash" part and pushing to ask if we had a deal were red flags to me. It was also weird that the email apologized for a delay when I got it maybe an hour after I sent an email. Even with that, I almost sent the $50.

"Hello Alex,

Thanks for writing, apologies for the delay in response. I got a chance to check my email.

I have for sale the campy front derailleur for sale in excellent condition. In very good shape. With a 28.6 clamp . Willing to let go for some extra cash.

I will take a $50(shipped).I am in Massachusetts and will ship via UPS. The asking price includes shipping and will take payment via PayPal gift payment .

What's your complete shipping address? Let me know if we have a deal .

Thanks,

David.

Just always be weary... If the deal is too good to be true, it most likely is.. 0 posts and recent forum registration will always raise a red flag.

I simply walk away from the transaction. Buy from someone reputable or from a trusted online seller (Fairwheel bikes, etc).

The thing was, at least with me, the deal was good, not an absolute steal, but in line with good deals here. But I agree—0 or low posts, no dealings in the future. Almost wish there were a verified/trusted members only classifieds.

While I would NEVER buy from someone with a zero post count occasionally I have sold small items to a zero post member with an older forum registration.

If you're active on these boards, you kind of know most of the users and user names. You kind of know who has what, and who sells what.. When random people come out of the woods responding to WTB ads or For Sale ads, it's best to protect yourself and error on the side of caution.

How did he contact you first, via PM or email?
