Serotta 1993 Coors Light Racing Team Bike

One last messin around build before I buckle down and stop tinkering w random stuff I stumble on while interweb skerfing.. I’m too in love w my Pegoretti options and too busy in normal life to keep doing how I do.

Going out on this high note though is a heckuva swan song.

I picked this one up as a pair of semi-complete framesets with the Time VXS that’s already in the classifieds. Not sure I’ll get back to even with them but it’s good cheap fun even when you’re throwin away some time and money - I mean, how often do you get to ride something one off like this? There’s what, like a handful of these in existence in this general size that were actual team bikes? It’s Colorado Concept of course, mix of regular lugs and half-lugs/bilam. It’s in pretty amazing condition for its age - just one small scrape in the paint and a couple little chips. The owner wasn’t sure who’s team bike it was but it’s gotta be one of the tall guys - Huber? Mann?

I threw it together this morning with parts bin bits - fortunately I’ve hoarded some nice condition 10-spd Chorus and Record stuff. It deserves silvery bits - and I have some - they’re just not as user-friendly as what I loaded up here.

The ride is classic steel tastiness. It planes but isn’t overly wiggly - though also not quite as confident and precise as my Pegs.. overall it’s just a fun kinda retro riding experience.

Still own mine….it was built for Jonas Carney, happened to be a perfect fit for me.

TomP and Sean here on the forum each took two turns owning it before I bought it back for good. I bought it in 1995. Built with then brand new Record 9 speed.

The ride is just sublime. Loved it so much, I had Dave Kirk build me a modern day interpretation.

That Kirk is fantastic. Nostalgia is nice - modern tubing built with some extra decades under the master's belt.. is just a wee bit nicer.

Interesting to note the differences here:

The one I had a couple years back that was Chris Huber's had more BB drop - but slightly tighter stays and a bit less clearance at the fork.. A little longer TT, shorter HT, and a much embiggened DT. So really, not even close to the same bike.. ha ha.

Here’s another shot of the (second bike) above, as raced late last season, for the historical record. It’s since had a slightly shorter Nitto Craft stem fitted on account of the long top tube. I’m now looking for some 10-speed aluminium Ergopower levers with latest hood shape to further refine matters. Probably almost as scarce as the frames…

So this is a different one than the one you had a few years ago. Ok, that was my first question.

Any idea of full geometry for this one, Clean? Certainly is a sharp bike.

Ever think of making a coffee table book? - like "The Coolest Bikes for Tall Riders" or something like that.

Very cool build Dan! And really neat to see the geometry differences in each frame, not something you would see in the modern era for team issue bikes.

Good points, Herb. I find the current stock of bikes in the Pro Peloton to be largely similar and super boring. I'm sure they ride great and are optimized for aero blah but I just don't get excited and want to own one.

such a cool frame; also still deserving of those modern components even if they're not silver

Did a metric century on this beauty today, which all of a sudden is a long ride for me.. and it rides great - but the fit just isn’t there. I’m on to longer stems and smaller frames and more setback. Is what it is.

It was fun being the weird guy on a steel bike for the group ride though.
