Thru axle with removable lever?

Are thru-axles available with a removable lever? My commuter bike has thru axles and the lever of the axle interferes with the mounting system of my Ortlieb Quickrack. If I have a flat on my commute, I will have to first remove the mounts for the Quickrack before I can unthread the axle. Hopefully, there is a solution to this problem.

You could also get one that just requires a hex wrench

Maybe use a thru-axle without a lever and an Allen wrench? https://robertaxleproject.com/

DT Swiss makes some thru axles with removable levers.

I had good luck with the DT Swiss ones with the removable lever, but I eventually found it simpler to just carry a quality multi-tool and use that.

Protip: make sure you use your muktitool to install the axles before you ride, that way you won't set a torque level that your tool can't loose on the road!

Isn't the DT Swiss handle just a really fancy hex wrench?

Thanks for the great suggestions, I think the RobertAxleProject will do the trick. I’ll just keep an allen wrench in my spare tire bag.

This is the Trek one... I have some variant of this on the back of my bike.

https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/e...-axle/p/26601/

My front axle is different and is from Manitou IIRC, but the tool/lever for the back TA works on the front too.

They sell the lever separate from the axle but the bikes come with the lever. The lever is not very long.. it is perhaps questionable whether it's good enough. I have only had one occasion to have to take my rear wheel out trail side and with the TA torqued correctly it's pretty hard to get it loose with the lever. So the right multi-tool might be better.

This is the Manitou TA that came with my fork, I rather like this design as one part of it stays captive inside one fork leg, it makes it a little faster to work with and you can't easily lose "nut".

The lever is magnetic, isn't it? I'd love to get just that part to fit mine

FWIW, it doesn't stay put in non-Trek axles. Probably because of the alloy used (like you said, I think it's magnetic - there's no detent/ball).

Another vote for Robert Axle Project - just be sure your multitool has a 6mm (most do).

I believe so.

But the thread pitch may not fit other bikes either.

No, it doesn't come out of the axle assembly, but after you tighten, you can pull outward on the handle and there are splined teeth so you can rotate the handle only to your desired position.

my Giant Revolt had these as well.. at least the front one did and I just kept in my handlebar bag when not in use.. it worked well.. I never checked, but I assume it was either a 5 or 6mm.. to my knowledge, the Giant lever was not magnetic..
