Ended today's ride with a stop at the shop for a beer. Only 4 miles to go after this but it always makes for a slow 4 miles.

The Bend tourism and economic development board will not approve of those pics - I thought it was always sunny?!?!? :Bike:

Great pics tho..

Minnewaska Through the Back Door

It was not supposed to go like this, but everything still turned out (mostly) OK. Kind of a combo cluster F---/great ride!

The idea was to ride the carriage roads at Minnewaska but avoid the parking headaches (and park fee) by parking at the base of the hill in Ellenville’s Berme Town Park, then ride up the Smiley Carriage Road to hook up with the other roads. I had hiked partway up this road in October 2018 when hiking into the Shingle Gully area of Sam’s Point. (That are is fantastic in itself. You can see photos of that HERE.)

I knew the road was not in great shape, but it was rideable for gravel bikes. I also knew that a long-term project had just concluded to rehabilitate this road. So I called the park office and explained exactly what we wanted to do. The lady there told me the road project was finished and the road is open to bikes.

What she didn’t tell me was that the rehabbed part of the road only went about halfway to the bottom of the hill! We met at the park, with some local friends of mine, my Sweet Lady Bee, plus angryscientist, hilltopperny, and efixler from the forum. The Paceliners took off first.

Then the rest of us headed out about 5 minutes later, and after about the first mile of steep and steadily deteriorating road, we ended up doing hike a bike for over two miles of “road” on the map that eventually turned into a narrow, rock-strewn path that finally hooked up with the dead end reconstructed section of the Smiley Road, where we found a sign telling us the trail we had just hiked was not open to bikes. Who knew? (There was no such signage anywhere on our way up.) I’m sure the lady in the park office had a good evil laugh at our expense, but we made it.

On the way we lost two of our riders who decided to turn back. Elayne had knee pain, and Chet both crashed AND lost his phone and car keys (we found them). This was his first visit to Minnewaska, and so Chet, my profuse apologies and promise to bring you back and make sure you see the true beauty of this place! We never did meet up with the other Paceliners, but we had sporadic contact with them through texts during the rest of the ride. Maybe Angry will post some of his photos here of their ride.

But once our shrunken group of four got to the real carriage roads it was the typical, beautiful Shawangunk vistas and unique biosphere that I have grown to love—and love showing to my friends who have not seen it before. The universal reaction is akin to “this is great!”, “I had no idea this was here!”, or just broad smiles as they ride and enjoy.

We had decided to take the highway back down the mountain, so we did that and stopped at Rough Cut brewery on the way for some socially distanced refreshments. The last local “attraction” we passed was the Ulster County Correctional Facility, where the razor wire is obviously kept shiny bright. Altogether it was only 23 miles, plus at least two miles of hike-a-bike.

If this happens during the "official" tour, is there a money-back-guarantee?
