Copake Vintage Bike Auction - Lots of pictures

I'd been wanting to go to this event about an hour from Albany for quite a few years, but it always caught me by surprise, something else was going on, etc. But this year I managed to make it happen and I'm glad I did. It's pretty much THE annual auction in the vintage bike world and starts with a swap meet Friday and then the main auction Saturday.

I couldn't get time off for the swap meet, but my friend Doug and I motored down to Copake for the final viewing and then the auction Saturday. There was an absolutely stunning collection of vintage bikes and accessories--and by "vintage" I mean 70, 80, one hundred years old and more. What struck me was that so many of the "new" ideas you see today for bikes aren't really new at all. What struck Doug was that he couldn't find anybody there to bid who actually rides bikes.

Anyway, here's my pBase gallery and some of the highlights . . .

This was out in the parking lot . . .

. . . a couple of "ordinaries" and this white bike where you actually sit inside the big wheel and pedal. Solid rubber tires . . . I assume you have to have a butt of steel to ride it for any length of time.

Vintage racing bike . . .

I doubt the tires are original, but who wouldn't love to ride a "little scorcher?"

UPS running over your shipping box . . .

. . . with their forklift? I dare them to try to get into THIS one! I couldn't find a vintage on it, but it looks, er, solid.

Again, proof . . .

. . . that new ideas aren't really. This "spin bike" is from 1920.

There were plenty of accessories and artwork . . .

. . . on sale, also. Here's a view of one of the past Serotta owners gatherings.

Thanks for sharing Dave, that looks like an interesting event.
The Orange Krate brings back some really good memories.

Great photos. Thanks for sharing them with us.

What did the Bowden go for? Here's one on eBay that has the (to me) unrealistic price of $40,000, plus $1,000 shipping:

I've "ridden" one of these. A local has one that he brings out to farmer's markets on occasion. Stopping is the real-hair raising part of the experience.

Anybody know what the big deal bike at the auction was?
