Man. So glad you're ok.
Did something similar a few years back. Not nearly as hard as you. Was able to get back on bike with some scrapes and a more cautious outlook. Still remember being a bit unsteady and able to ride after sitting for a few .. Got back on bike with a bit more cautious outlook. Heal well. |

Recover and remember.
The recovery may be easier than remembering what put you in recovery. It sounds to me like you were on a wheel that was not to be trusted. Rest well. |

Keith,
So thankful you’re well enough to type out your story and share it here as that means you’re still with us and you’re going to be better! I had a once-in-a-hundred years wreck in December. A deer jumped to cross a dirt road at night as a group of 6 of us were riding. It hit me broadside from my right, knocked me off my bike and knocked me unconscious for 3-4 minutes. Broke 3 ribs on my right side so that kept me from riding for a few weeks while (hopefully) my brain healed. Then just yesterday, Sat. 3/25, I overlapped the wheel in front of me 8 miles into a metric century ride (Tour de Tifton in Tifton GA) and went down hard at 18-20 mph. Rider behind me rode over me and crashed as well. Both of us have some road rash but otherwise we and our bikes were okay, so after a few minutes to recoup we were both able to continue and finish the ride. I feel blessed and thankful that it wasn’t worse! Old adage - if you ride, you will crash. The only question is when and how bad! Prayers for you in your continued recovery - I mean it! Glad to see you are on the mend Keith! Those accidents where somebody gets knocked unconscious are very scary!

Heal quickly and good thoughts sent your way. BTW-koodos to the first ER that sent you to a better equipped second..TBIs are nothing to sneeze at(DON'T sneeze, hurt your rib). Heal quick and completely. I don't know if you've ever had a concussion but your wife will help to identify any 'issues' as you heal..like forgetfulness, anger, depression, anxiety...seek help is ya need it.. -Peter

Keith, so sorry to hear this! I too did the over the handlebars thing a few years ago, knocked out, hospital, etc.and like you, bruises and such, but no broken bones. Though not as bad as yours in terms of time unconscious, I can offer my experience as a reference point. First, I was foggy most of the time…by which I mean I felt almost myself but not quite right. I was told I would feel like sleeping a lot. Yes, true, and at those moments, just nap. It is indeed your brain in recovery mode. There was slow increase in the amount of time in more-or-less alert/awake mode, over weeks. Then, for me, a point where I woke up in the morning and felt a recovered clarity I had missed. This was about a month after the event. I have learned that everyone has a different trajectory, but that there is no rushing the recovery process. Developing a sort of zen acceptance that I was letting my subconscious lead the way in terms of taking it easy, was important. In the process, I got up and had nice walks initially, but didn’t get on the bike until after the clarity of mind started to return. And then slowly and with effort to make sure my balance was ok. Getting back on the bike was a great moment, confirming progress. You will know when you are ready! Meanwhile, use the time to pick out a new helmet, and sleep a lot! You will get there.

Heal well!
Concussions can take months to heal, so Supercross is off the cards for a while.... |
