I think low trail makes a bike feel lively. I always thought this was all planing was, but Jan disagrees.

As most people use those terms, I think those are functions of geometry -- responsiveness (or rather, overresponsiveness) to steering inputs and weight shifts -- rather than frame flexibility.

Matthew ex of Kogswell Cycles brought the term into the cycling mainstream by way of sailing jargon. Jan appropriated it. Planing is an abstract experience best defined as everything is in sync, even if for a moment. Men fight wars over the definition of planing (as it regards cycling). Women don’t because they’re more enlightened.

O my god! Now gender is a factor in planing. We need the experts in.

The first rule of planing is to not talk about planing.

It is how you got places that were far away prior to COVID.

Can I only deplane if I have waited three hours on the tarmac?

I'm one of those who believe its a thing.

To me, its when the frame gives just enough to make hard efforts a little more effortless, its most noticeable out of saddle, and more so on my traditional skinny tube bikes with thin triple butted tubing. Its like getting a little more height bouncing on a springy steel plate vs solid concrete. I'm not extremely well versed in frame construction but its mostly in the rear triangle and beefier chainstays take away from this feeling.

Some people would say the frame is flexy, but the right kind of flex. It doesn't seem to sap as much energy imo but all of this is the just "seat of the pants" feel. I might not be faster on Strava segments but definitely makes riding more fun and less taxing. Maybe its the way I ride or how I handle the bike, who knows, thats my perspective anyway.

IANAP, but I tend to think planing relates to resonance:

If we accept planing, then can we accept that steel frames get "flexed out"?..
