I use a similar root feeder

I have a root feeder similar to the one pictured. They work great as long as you can get them into the ground. I water about once a week and move it around the tree if they are getting dry. I have revived several trees this way.

Just make sure you get one that is heavy duty as you have to get them into the ground. Mine is all metal.

Great idea! - can't believe I didn't think of it considering that I've logged well over 1000 soil borings.

A jar sedimentation test can also confirm the results if you have a day or so to let it settle.

I was a gardener / groundskeeper during summers in high school and college at a hospital and a golf course....we used those a couple times per summer if there was an extended dry spell.

As others mentioned, it really depends on your soil, how well it holds water, and if there is any ground water and how deep it is.

Cheers.
