Looking for aluminum frame suggestions to replace a CAAD10
I have a gray 2014 Cannondale caad10, built up with ultegra 6800 di2, that I use as a commuter bike and on the trainer. I'm looking for a new aluminum frame that is something more unique, interesting, or at least different. Since this is not an everyday bike, I'd like to spend $800 or less on the frame. I would extend that up to $1,000 for something that's really cool. Ideally, it would be something that is Di2 compatible. Just looking for ideas at this point.

Frank the Welder
I'm thinking of checking him out. He welds up the Spooky frame. Seems to know what he is doing

Big fan of Rock Lobster, love mine.
You'll also have great luck with brands such as Spooky, VNYL, LOW, Gaulzetti, and Zanconato. I'd probably get a Spooky if I needed something right away. These can all probably be found in the classifieds (or somewhere else preowned) under $1000 for a frameset. My Lobster was half of that. Last edited by jtbadge; 07-20-2018 at 08:57 PM. |

I hate to be that guy but I really think you should at least try a carbon frame, I don't know how much better any other aluminum frame will actually be than a caad10. At any rate the post above covers all the good aluminum frames I'm aware of.

Is it possible to weld aluminum frames as clean as a Moots?

lots of good options named so far. adding two to the mix:
Canyon Endurace AL (i think you can get a new frameset around your price range) Stoemper - builds some very nice alu bikes, could find a nice used one. And I suppose you've already considered the CAAD 12? I think if I wanted value for money an Alu bike, I'd be looking at one of these |

Lynskey titanium frames are only $800 brand new with lifetime warranty and modern things like di2 ready (and others you don't need, like thru axle flat mount disc)
If you want unique/interesting lynskey has "Helix" tubing. |

I've heard nothing but good things about the Allez Sprints. Not that "special" per say but has more aero design features than a CAAD10 and a bit more aggressive geometry. I currently have a 2014 CAAD10 as well and I think my next bike will be the (rumored) Allez Sprint Disc next year.

Tsunami is probably the sweet spot of affordable and interesting.
Getting an interesting/less common aluminum frame (set?) for 800-1000 is going to be tough or require patience. All the lovely small builders above do nice work, but they're more than your price point, even used. Vynl is somewhat less expensive, but there probably aren't a lot of used ones around. I own a 2nd-hand, di2-specific Spooky Mulholland and it's great. Another Cannondale would be a fine choice. |
