clipping knobs off tires?

I have some Vittoria Vittoria Terreno Wet 31mm tubulars. Don't ride CX but have thought about mounting them up for allroad/gravel etc. to get a little more cush than my 27mm Vlaanderens. I don't think I need the 3mm knobs even for crappy pavement and that they may be a bit squirrely on tarmac with the knobs. Anyone have success cutting knobs off tires? How did you do it? Thanks!

I did this a couple times BITD when I was still using legacy 90s design MTB tires with super tall knobs.

Either side cutter or end cutter works fine. Disposable blade utility knife works too but you need a sharp new blade a couple times per tire and it's easy to cut into the casing.

I don't bother anymore, mainly because tires are so much better. If I was in your shoes I'd sell the tires or just ride as is.

Either sell them and get a diff tire... OR, just ride them. They'll wear off on their own, and if you're riding hard enough on pavement to make them squirrely, then you're doing too much on the wrong bike.

Would I be stating the obvious in suggesting there's also probably not very much usable rubber below those knobs...?

Since you have those tires in hand already, I agree with the folks saying just ride them. I had a set of 33mm Specialized Terra knobby tubulars I picked up used, I set them up on a wheelset for my CX bike and did all sorts of mixed surface local riding with them. Just pump em up a bit firmer if your ride has more pavement/hardpack dirt than trails/singletrack. Sure I wouldn't want to rail a paved corner at 30+ mph on the knobbys, but short of that they'll do fine.

Surely someone would trade. At least give it a shot.

Wasn't... Michelin (?) the tire company with tire engineers at races customizing tires by cutting/melting knobs off of mountain bike tires? Back when they made green tread tires.

I remember this being a thing, like everyone was doing it. Sort of like the athletic tape on legs, but for tires. Everyone had their magic formula.

They still clip knobs in downhill sometimes, and you can buy a special tool to do it

I was gifted a set of Nokian W240 studded tires a winter or two ago. They were a skosh wide for the bike I wanted to use them on, so i used a utility knife to trim some of the knobs on the edges. It wasn't difficult, just tedious. I suppose you could also trim off the other knobs.

OTOH, maybe you could send them to Peter Weigle and have him sand them.

Sharp scissors work fine, too.

Thanks, all. I have had them in the classifieds for a while but no interest so I though maybe I should do something myself. Sounds like it's certainly possible, but good question on how much rubber is on the tire below the knobs. And since their tubs it's either replace the Vlaanderen's on my Bora One 35s, or get another set of disc tubs.
