+1. That's very close to my 2x9 gearing that I spent a lot of time tailoring to my preference. 38/24x11-34 9-speed on 26" for me vs. 38/24x11-36 10sp on 26" on your chart.

The key to happiness with a 26" MTB running 1x is to simply have two groupsets and two wheelsets. It's only an hour's work to switch between the two, it literally couldn't be easier.

My '83 Stumpjumper basket bike is now 1x8 (from 3x7). Mostly NOS drivetrain parts (RD, shifters, crankset) with new chain, chainring, and cassette.

I went 34x11-32. Works fine for errands around town. With 2.3 Rene Herse slicks.

It really depends how much you want to spend and how wide a range of gearing you need.

I also wanted to keep most of the parts looking era-appropriate, so didn't want modern 11 speed RD and cranks (usually black).

Hey all,

Thanks for all of the input, but this will be a city grocery getter, long straightaway rig, but able to tackle a few city hills when need be.

So 1X is the way to go, Sram is tops in shifting performance and $$.

Box components looks interesting but, there's a lot to sort through.
Microshift might be the winner.

Further thoughts? OH, if anyone spots a great deal online, please post the link.

I just converted my Litespeed Unicoi back to a flat bar bike. I am running 2x11 because I had some parts (Sugino AT 44-33 cranks and BB, DA barcon shifter, CX70 top pull FD) already. So I bought a Deore 11 speed 2x RD and 11s shifter for a bit more than $60. I use the barcon to shift the FD. I'm using the HG800 11-34 cassette, so fairly close gear jumps. Total gear range is about 25 inches to 104 inches. The Deore RD will shift cogs as large as 42T IIRC, this setup could be used as a 1x11 as well with a 11-42 cassette.

I have had great luck with a raceface 42 chainring and shimano deore m5100rd and either a 11-34 or 11-42 rear cassette. I switch back and forth altho I am rarely using the 11-42 as the 11-34 seems to be geared low enough for anything that is paved. I have my microshifter in friction mode as it shifts so nice I kind of like how fun it is not using index.

Is that the really loud hub? Like louder than White Industries. It's cool, I had one for a minute.
