Surly steamroller - tube diameters?
I’ve got some s and a couplers that were cut out of a broken frame I bought off eBay like 5 years ago in the garage from when I was diy framebuilding. I’ve sold all my gear so I can’t build myself a frame but sort of want a simple single speed travel bike.
The couplers I have are both for 28.6 tubes. The salsa casserole in the classifieds could be a good fit but I haven’t heard back from the seller. Following that idea i was thinking a surly steamroller might be a decent candidate for diy s and a conversion. Does anyone know the top and downtube diameter measurements? |

I don't have it anymore, but my Steamroller from ~10 years ago definitely had a larger DT than TT. I would think you would need a bigger coupler for the DT.

You know, I never even thought about it, but S&S coupler install is definitely something i would take on as a project in the garage myself.
hmmm Sorry cant help on the Surly dimension check though...

Thanks for the info, maybe I’ll have to get a friend to miter some tubes for me and borrow some heat sinks.

It looks like the tubes just need to be square cut and the couplers silver brazed in. What are you referring to with heat sinks?

To retrofit an existing frame it’s exactly like you say. |

Just measured my steamroller, my calipers say 29mm. So 28.6 mm is probably right accounting for paint.

I feel like I'm a pretty good framebuilder, but installing S&S couplers stressed me out a bit the one time I did it. They are big hunks of stainless, so there is a lot to go wrong. Plus I didn't have the installation nuts, so I was worried about the threads. Put a wet rag under some tinfoil and everything worked out okay. Having said that, I keep looking for a wrecked bike with couplers on it to buy.

I should add that mine is an early one and they may changed by now.
