while both are absolute top-class rider, i think MVdP has the edge over WvA in terms of achievement and versatility -- just look at their palmares:
  • both are 3-time world CX champions
  • both have won a short stage race (britain and denmark)
  • VdP has been 3-time EU CX champion
  • VdP has been EU MTB champion

    major 1-day wins
  • VdP -- Amstel Gold, Dwars door Vlaanderen, Brabantse Pijl
  • WvA -- Strade Bianche

SB is a different race. The likelihood of punctures is way higher. Once off the back, getting back on is no easy task. May have to rely on neutral support.

If time is of the essence, wouldn't a non Laborious wheel change be the first choice regardless of terrain?

The industry has to keep making money, and I see the riding in the wet aspect, so disc brakes surely have a place in the Pro Peloton.

Super good race to watch though. WVA just dropped a small group and basically TT to the finish. Dude is seriously strong.

I think the issue isn't whether you have a through axle or quick release, rather the logistics of getting a new wheel and what the race looks like as you try to get back on: more hills, few riders to share pace, no compact caravan to surf.

Does MVP have problems when the conditions become more extreme? He popped in Yorkshire, and he popped yesterday. One cold and wet pop, and one very hot and dry pop.

.."Really?"

"Yeah...I will go first..."

"Ok..."

"I can eat you for breakfast, lunch...and dinner!"

"I drive a nicer car"

"My ear is bigger than yours..."

"I can drag you wherever I want to go..."

"My grandpa is the dope!"

er...ok....you win!

i dunno, lots of people struggled with the heat. apparently MvdP flatted when the race was on, went too deep getting back on. same with alaphillipe and many other highly regarded names.

back to palmares, top-level numbers @ procyclingstats:
MvdP -- 22 Wins -> GC (3) / One day races (8) / ITT (0)
WvA -- 12 Wins -> GC (1) / One day races (5) / ITT (3)

most points in a season:
MvdP -- 1362
WvA -- 860

thats with MvdP never being on a first-division team and never riding in a grand tour yet!

at this point in their young careers MvdP has the edge in results...but the differences are quite small...and like i said...both are seriously top-class guys...i like them both!!!.

Who ever thought that we would see Brent Bookwalter come in a classic sandwiched between Stybar and Van Avermant.
