It's not every day one builds a bike for canti brakes but I must say it was fun. This fillet brazed steel frameset will first head to Spring Valley, CA where my partner Joe Bell will do his thing and then it will head to Italy to ride pavement, gravel and and the occasional cross course.

I wonder what the owner will have for dinner after a ride? Maybe I should go over and make sure the delivery goes OK so that I can sample the food? I could bring a bike and ride some to work up my appetite I think.

That sounds pretty good.

Don't forget pics after it's painted.

Or do we really have to remind you?

Your booking has been confirmed! If you show up on a Friday we always make pizza. Otherwise, fairly seasonal menu, only good stuff.

This is awesome!

What tire clearance did you go with?

Are those different chainstays than usual? They look to have more shaping, such as the vertical compression on the back third.

Tire clearance up to 38. I usually prefer to ride with 33-35s, but having the clearance for 38s makes it even more versatile. Slightly quicker handling might make the larger tires more fun as well, so I am very excited to try it out.

I have noticed the more tapered chainstays than usual, but that is up to Dave to elaborate on. I like the look of them so I am happy.

Good eye - they are not my normal chainstay. I switch to this S bend oval stays to get more tire room than I can get with my signature round stays. If I really push it with long stays and some deep clearance dents I can get a 35 mm tire to work with straight round stays. But going above that requires more room so I go with a S bend oval. This allows me to use fairly short stays while having plenty of tire room. In the end the real challenge is fitting the chainstay in between the tire and the chainring. There's only so much room in there and one needs to play with the tube size and shape to make it work.

So it's all a matter of picking the right tube for the job.

Thanks for the question.

I have placed a deposit and am thinking through component choices. Application will be conventional paved road riding, mostly on flats but with mountain rides about 1-2 times per month in the summer. Any thoughts on wheels that complement Dave's frames?

Current contenders:
  • HED Belgium+ w/Chris King
  • HED Ardenne Black
  • DT Swiss PR 1400 DICUT OXIC
  • Zip 303 w/Chris King or White Industries T11
  • Campy Bora WTO 33 or 45
So yeah, a big range of choices. I am hesitant on carbon but have not ruled it out. Also would be open to getting two sets of wheels.

Mostly likely will be going with Shimano for the groupset.

Great choices, in my opinion. Even if you only run 33-35, having a little extra room on the sides would come in handy at times.

Thank you for the scope, Dave. I like how they compress at the back end. To me, it looks both hearty and compliant. I am sure the ride will be lovely.

There are no bad choices in that list.

For primarily road, assuming you're going with rim brakes, my choice would be the DT Swiss PR 1400 Dicut Oxic. I don't think that the extra width of the HED is necessary, and Carbon is louder and more fussy with rim brakes. The all-black is handsome, and DT Swiss hubs are a benchmark.

Some stainless action to close out the week before a long weekend. Ride lots, be safe and take in the view.
