Wow, good catch. I didn’t even notice that, stopped assembling once I found the other damage so he could get a real quote for repairs.

He took it to two shops in town here, first one said the derailleur was bent but he wanted to take it to the local Trek dealer. The dealer said he didn’t notice anything wrong and is charging him $150 for a tune-up plus more if he finds anything wrong.

Newer Shimano front derailleurs, at least Tiagra and higher I believe, use a pin under the bolt that allows you to adjust cable angle into the derailleur.

Either way you set it up the cable should be under the bolt, not on top.

Ha! I was about the post that picture. Thank you Mustang pal, for going above and beyond. I am still using mostly 9/10 speed stuff so I guess it doesn't apply but I do have a bike or two using 11, I have to go check on that.

I’m sure major bike brands ship thousands of bikes a year all over the world, if a small percentage of those are damaged in the process I’m sure the receiving shop can work the warranty and/or repair them before selling.

However, I feel a shop that is being paid to ship a bike to an individual should take additional care to ensure the item gets there without damage.

Is that too much to expect?

Not at all..The bike should be packed expecting that it'll get tossed around by the package apes, regardless of where they are. We packed and shpped a LOT of bikes, and it was a job we dreaded..not because of the chore but the constant possibility that it'll get damaged...Never any payback for 'over packing'..lots of payback for a crappy job...

I've bought more complete bikes locally than long distance over the years, but mostly doesn't mean only, and my most recent purchase was a mail order mtb. That thing was packed rock solid in a very substantial box -- practically mummified with packing material. Seemed like overkill but, then, the bike did arrive without a scratch, dent, or ding anywhere, which is how I wanted it -- so I got a shiny new bike that worked just fine with minimal work on my part -- and whatever it cost the shop in time, materials, and shipping cost, they at least had a happy customer.
