The reissue had a threadless steerer and only came in Motorola and Molteni paint, this is an original MXL in the FNG paint scheme from ~1997.

Interesting that it clears 28s on wide rims, my 58cm in the same paint scheme only cleared a 26c in the rear, even with no brake caliper mounted.

Great bike, wild paint scheme.

Very cool frameset!

For what it's worth, MXL does differ slightly from MAX in that the top tubes are round instead of bi-oval like the downtube.

Good luck with the sale!

Please post the serial number. I'm sure Emerxil (our forum Merckx guru with encyclopedic knowledge) will be able to provide more info based on that.

My 1994 MXL easily clears 28mm tires, too. I could probably run 30's. The ultimate gravel bike!

Forum user Tdot was looking for a size 57 MX Leader a few weeks ago. You might try sending him a message to see if he's found one yet.

I’m pretty sure I sold TDot this exact frame like a year and a half ago.

I don’t think this is the same one ... but possible I guess as JTBadge’s did make a trip to Colorado ... can’t remember which forum member bought it:

Either way it’s an amazing paint scheme and I do regret selling it but had too much going on at the time.

I found my serial number and it is indeed a different bike - but the number is only 2 off of this one. 7810.
