Unbound Gravel 2023
It's going on this weekend at Emporia, Kansas. Would love to see pictures or read ride reports from fellow paceliners taking part in this year's Unbound Gravel.

Who knows what kind of incidents he may have had, but he's coming up on close to a decade since he was racing in the world tour, and he no longer in contention for the wins in big races. Good for him if he can still make a career out of it, but he's not the rider he was in 2016.

The level of competition is certainly higher than it used to be, but the injuries he has dealt with over the past couple of years has had a bigger impact on his results. Prior to those he was 4th in 2021 at Unbound, which isn't all that long ago. It also sounds like a sloppy mud fest, and he is running 44mm Knobby Rene Herse tires in his Super Six Evo - probably not the best combo for the mud. |

Scratched, apparently

I was a bit dubious of his plan to race 350 miles on no sleep, only 7 days before he begins The Tour Divide... Starting a mammoth effort like that with even just the slightest amount of fatigue is crazy to me. So perhaps that was weighing on his decision to scratch. Otherwise, if a couple hours of hike a bike was his undoing, he might be in trouble for the TD, which looks to be really soggy/snowy this year.

On Ian Boswell's podcast he mentioned that since they couldn't pinpoint the cause of his blood clot he has to continue to take them, but he can stop taking them before events and start back up afterwards.

It's really something that this turned into the premiere gravel event, but it takes place on terrain with a whole event can be absolutely ruined by a little rain.

7-way sprint for the win, wow. Winning time was 44 minutes greater than last year. What a race.

Sprint finish
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pOB...wgMjAyMw%3D%3D "Last year’s runner-up Keegan Swenson won the men’s 200-mile race of the 2023 Garmin Unbound Gravel presented by Craft on Saturday, sprinting out of a seven-rider group. Petr Vakoc was second and Lachlan Morton third." - cyclingnews.com

It is a little crazy that they finish a 10 hour pro event in the same finishing chute as average joes finishing the 100 with a 9 hour time or something. Seems super dangerous, and potentially frustrating for those in 3-7 who had to deal with that traffic.
