Unbound Gravel 2023

The level of competition is certainly higher than it used to be, but the injuries he has dealt with over the past couple of years has had a bigger impact on his results. Prior to those he was 4th in 2021 at Unbound, which isn't all that long ago. It also sounds like a sloppy mud fest, and he is running 44mm Knobby Rene Herse tires in his Super Six Evo - probably not the best combo for the mud.

I was a bit dubious of his plan to race 350 miles on no sleep, only 7 days before he begins The Tour Divide... Starting a mammoth effort like that with even just the slightest amount of fatigue is crazy to me. So perhaps that was weighing on his decision to scratch. Otherwise, if a couple hours of hike a bike was his undoing, he might be in trouble for the TD, which looks to be really soggy/snowy this year.

I have some friends who are riding and they said everyone riding the xl quit because it was too much mud lol

7-way sprint for the win, wow. Winning time was 44 minutes greater than last year. What a race.

It is a little crazy that they finish a 10 hour pro event in the same finishing chute as average joes finishing the 100 with a 9 hour time or something. Seems super dangerous, and potentially frustrating for those in 3-7 who had to deal with that traffic.
