Most roadish MTB shoe?
Might pick up a new pair of gravel shoes this season...
I am most comfortable in road shoes and pedals, but for many reasons I use MTB pedals on my gravel bike and obviously this means mtb shoes. My favorite road shoes are Giro with the carbon sole. Light and stiff. I have the upper end, whatever they are called Giro mtb shoes and they are fine, but definitely a lot heavier and not as comfortable to me as the road shoe. I do not require big lugs or gobs of traction. Looking for a minimalist, lightweight basically road shoe that is walkable and uses SPD cleats. Sidi is out for me, just dont work for my foot. Thoughts?

They are more substantial than your ideal.
https://www.specialized.com/us/en/re...=300655-173643 I wonder if the Sworks model would work for you? https://www.specialized.com/us/en/s-...xoC6rsQAvD_BwE That said, I think Boas are an over-engineered invention. Give me old style Shimano buckles and some velcro any time.

I'm using the SW Recon SL and SW Recon. Pretty much same upper on both, mtb version (sl) has me wondering how durable it'll be for longevity (lots of scratching/damage from xc and gravel riding) especially compared to my xxx mtb shoes. Which brings me to those Bontrage xxx road and mtb are nearly identical as well.

The SWorks Recon Mountain shoe is basically the SWorks carbon road shoe but for spd and with a just few bits of rubber. I love these shoes because they are stiff, light and durable. These are go-fast shoes.
In contrast, the Recon 3.0 is more trail friendly - less stiff and more walkable. It is the better choice when your feet might spend more time on the ground. Last edited by sparky33; 06-01-2023 at 06:52 PM. |

I've been quite happy with my fizik Terra. Carbon sole, 1 strap 1 BOA, in a variety of colors (when they're not muddy).
https://www.fizik.com/us_en/terra-x5.html ETA: the Shimanos mentioned above are loved by many. Worth considering.

Rx8.
I have purchased 2 pairs, one in '19 and one in '23, hoping they would fit. Just don't work though, even though the size was different the second time. Total bummer because they were in deep sale for like $115 this past winter. Definitely close to a road shoe in stiffness, and pretty close in look. I know there is a model with an ankle sleeve, I'm not referring to that one. That's not exactly road referencing. |

I absolutely love my S-Works Specialized Recon shoes. I have the lace-up version and they are absurdly light, stiff, and comfortable. Seriously stable platform, I don't feel like I'm giving up anything to road shoes. Pair them with the Shimano XTR pedals that have the shorter road length axle and you're in business.
I have also owned the Shimano RX8 shoes, which were great but the fit wasn't quite right for me. Narrower feet, go for the Shimano, if you need a wider toe box I think you can't beat Specialized shoes. |

Nick, I had the same impulse with my Firefly last year and got the Fizik Vento Ferox Carbon shoes. One boa and one strap. Incredibly comfortable and very roadish, imho. Tim

Giro Republic, lace up, and Giro Berm, velcro straps. I have a pair of each, with the Republic being quite old with a lot of miles. The Berm has a bit more room for toes. Both very comfortable for short walks. The Republic looks a lot more like a road shoe than an mtb.
