Great thread, we really lost something when off-road rim brakes went away. Unparalleled aesthetic.

What defines a gravel bike? Who were the first builders? I'm seeing CX and drop bar mountain bikes in this thread. Seems like it's a broad category. Tom Ritchey said all bikes are gravel bikes. As a kid, I lived on a dirt road and rode a Royce Union 3 speed with 1-1/4"x 26" tires on those roads. Where I grew up in upstate NY, we didn't call these roads gravel. They were called dirt roads. Of course there was some bit of gravel but they weren't covered in it. There was the term "monster cross" used before the term "gravel" to describe this genre of bike.

Every bike since the invention of the safety bicycle has been a Gravel Bike, just like every bike is a road bike, a mountain bike, a time trial bike, a track bike, a fixie...

Don't get lost in the details, the only limits are within your mind.

Yes I have read that Ritchey comment many times before. Its as useful as the person who points out that every rim brake bike is also a disc brake bike.
Ok then.

I could ride my mountain bike on a track and its a track bike, but its clearly not.
A gravel bike is a bike that is set up to excel on gravel roads.

As such, any bike that anyone built before the current gravel explosion(last 6 years) would be a gravel bike before it was a thing.
Some will proudly point out that theyve been riding gravel since they were small because of where they grew up. Cool- show the bike.

This was my first custom bike. I got it specifically to have a bike with road manners that could fit bigger tires for dirt.

Please note the other antique on the bars, a paper Q sheet

Well yeah, performance advantages aside, there are few things uglier than a modern MTB, except maybe a modern TT bike.

From today's ride my 2011 Strong.
Then it was called his Personal Blend model that did it all.
Just before gravel took off.

Not the best photo, but the Cannondale and Trek are roughly from 1988 and both are set up with drop bars for gravel/off road touring since new. They were part of the 50 bike collection I ended up with the job of selling for a buddy.
My first "gravel bike" was an early St400 that I squeezed a 42mm 700c up front and 35mm in the rear.

I rode a 26" "cruiser" type BMX bike before we got MTBs in my part (Rochester) NY on the canal trails.. One thing I was thinking was my now 43mm tires "looked familiar" somehow, and did the conversion it's 1.75" which is the same as I used all those years ago.. carry on!

I got it in 2012. This picture is from 2014. This is the bike that really opened up cycling for me. Rode it everywhere. I was a moron for selling it. I'm still a moron, but for different reasons these days.

Early noughts Gunnar Crosshairs. It's currently my trainer bike and still likes to rip it up on the local gravel roads.

My old Savine worked great as a gravel bike.

This goes back to 2012 doing recon in The Everglades for a Roubaix style ride we put together: The Gator Roubaix. 40 road / 35 gravel miles starting and finishing from the Brian Piccolo Velodrome in Hollywood Florida.

The bikes are all straight road bikes with 25mm GatorSkins or GravelKings.
I think I had 28 Challenge PRs on my Hampsten.
LOTS of flats until we got the tire pressure thing sorted.

The bikes.. Dave on the left is on a carbon TIME VRS, Me on the Hampsten MAX,
Matt S. on a Spooky raw aluminum crit bike, my buddy Riley on a Colnago C40.
Rick took this photo from his DeRosa Neo Primato.
