Amongst all the perfect things about that bike, the paint is absolutely gorgeous. I visualize finding that in a shop in 20yrs, paint faded and chipped and representing the pinnacle of bike craftsmanship from the era, the same way we drool over Colnagos and Marinonis and Sachs.

Amazing bike. I am 99% sure that my next bike will be a carbon one, but Winter and a couple of others give me pause to think another steel bike is the way to go.

Thanks, folks. I took a few days off the internet for the holiday, but I appreciate the kind words.

Stunner with nods to British builders (headtube lug design).

I'm not sure what cheap or XL mean for you, but Lucky Duck in Oakland has a frame and rack set built in a very similar vein. All new- give them a buzz.

Other than the shake down ride I don't have direct riding experience with either, but the owner of the bike enjoys both and has good things to say.
This comment raises the question as to whether you build bikes to fit you in order to try out ideas and materials? I see Mr. Kirk making a lot of tall bikes which suggests that he builds, tries, and sells once he has had his fun, nailed down an idea or otherwise. do you have a collection or rolling inventory of Winter bikes?

What an amazing opportunity to use what you make. I can't 'use' the emails I 'make' for my job!

Yes, if I'm trying specifically to test something it will usually end up in a bike. It's a slippery slope between R&D and compulsively adding to the bikes in the house, but I think I strike a pretty sensible balance.
