You effectively “remote mount” the release lever to the other side of the bars with a cable. It appears the installed an inline cable adjuster to take up the slack between levers.

Looking at the video again, I think you're right about the (lack of) junction box. I originally thought I saw one cable coming out of each shifter and disappearing under the stem, and a single cable emerging from under the stem and running to the derailleur. On second look, there are actually 2 cables coming from the right shifter (twisted around each other to look like a single cable).
