OT: We lost another one...Olivia Newton-John

Just saw the news that Olivia Newton-John passed away at the age of 73. The cause of death hasn't been given yet, but it is most likely the cancer she has been battling for many years.

Another reminder of how I'm aging, along with my memories of years gone by.

RIP Sandy, greased lightning and god speed.

Bummer. She was one of my wife's favorites.
I played in a band in the late 1980s that did a killer techno-pop/nu-metal cover of "Have You Never Been Mellow?"

I recall Fugazi covering it one night. I always had respect for her take on pop music, it was certainly authentic. RIP

RIP, down side of getting up in years is repeated like news..

Up-side I suppose is that the folks moving on are not hearing about us moving on..

My wife after watching a movie in which a husband left 1st recently, got mad and said "you better not leave me".

I thought all this time she wanted to get rid of me. I decided that was the best time to tell her I had just bough another bike.

Enjoy the surface while you can y'all!

One of my coworkers has had a life-long crush on O N-J. A +60 year old retired state employee working for us part time, he has pictures of her on his desk and elsewhere.

He's crying.

Wow - I never knew this (from the NYT story):

"Her mother was the daughter of the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Max Born."

How many of us can say that we're the grandchild of a Nobel Prize winner?

Like Bob above my wife was a big fan. No idea how many times she's watched Grease but it's a bunch. Olivia fought like hell to beat cancer. She seemed like a genuinly wonderful person. RIP

Definitely not my cup of tea musically but I can appreciate that she had some cultural resonance. 73 is still too young. Battling cancer variously since the early 90's.

Not to be a jerk but why is it even relevant? Do you like her music better knowing that information?

Never heard of Max Born myself.

It’s called an “obituary.” Obit writers try to highlight the most salient details of a person’s life. So, yeah, the fact that ONJ was a direct descendant of a Nobel Prize winner is relevant. Not too many Nobel Prize winners running around.

Also, I’m Jewish, and had no idea that ONJ was related to someone (the NP recipient) who escaped the Holocaust.

Personally, I had no idea. I thought it was fascinating, and texted it to some family members.

I found that really interesting. Max Born is huge. He also had a very interesting life- fleeing Nazi Germany, etc. Isnt anything about a person's life, including their family and lineage, on topic in an RIP thread?
