OT: Car repair... never seen this before

I spent this afternoon doing some maintenance to our cars. Changing oil, air filters, wipers, and swapping pads/rotors on our Highlander. Finished that first then did what I needed to do on the other car and went back to test drive and bed in the pads. 1/8 of a mile from home did the 1st hard stop heard a grinding noise... pull over and look and didn't see anything amiss so turned around and went back to the house.
Took the wheel off and discovered the rotor sheared in two. Anyone else ever have this happen? Put the old rotors back on for now, and sending these back.

Faulty manufacturing/poor materials would be my opinion. If you don't mind, where did you get them? That's frightening.
I do all the maintenance on our older cars (new one goes to the shop) and I'd like to NOT run into poor parts.

Ordered this pair from Rockauto. I'm just glad it sheared off close to home when I was actively looking/listening for problems.

Could it be that the offset of the rotor was incorrect and when you applied brakes it ripped the disc from the hub portion of the rotor?

Centric / Stoptech rotors have always worked well for me when available.

Sounds like one of the regional suppliers perhaps isn't too critical of who they buy their rotors from!
Yeah, generic brake parts from China, what could possibly go wrong?

Looks like a possible cooling-rate issue during manufacture, a "process" problem in other words.

Ya. Im done with cheap after market anything. Used an aftermarket coolant temp sensor in my daughters ford. couple thousand later its malfunctioned and I need to do it again. Rotors vary greatly in quality as well YMMV...….

I agree - I always pay extra for the Honda parts. One time I was in a pinch and got some rotors from NAPA. When I went to pick them off the counter I almost threw them in the air -they were very light....

After I had the motor swap done on my bmw, the guys doing the work needed to replace one of the bigger vacuum hoses. So they did, and about 3 months later, it was winter and all of a sudden, I got this CRAZY idle. Turns out, the knock-off brand of hose they ordered already had a huge gash in it, we're guessing from going hot to cold so much. After that, anything rubber, go OEM.
