unPAved - Lewisburg PA 10/14/2018

I couldn't see a post about this already, so wanted to share.

We're lucky to have some really good gravel events in PA - Keystone Gravel and Lu Lacka Wyco Hundo are two of my consistent favs. 2018 sees the debut of a "A Premier Raw Road Adventure through 120 miles (and over 10,000 feet) of Central Pennsylvania". Organized by Dave Pryor (of Transylvania Epic stage race, Bilenky Junkyard Cross, Monkey Knife Fight, SSCXWC 2013 and bacon-suit-wearing fame), this looks to be a pretty epic day on the bike. There are 120, 90 and 30 mile options. Really looking forward to it. A few details here:

For true masochists, Iron Cross is the weekend after on 10/21/2018!

I'm registered for the 90, because I'm only a little crazy, not completely insane like Mr David Q Pryor and his wife Selene Yeager....

I'm registered for the 120 along with 2 friends. We'll be cruising along on our Trek Boones, we figured if we're going to head out that way we might as well get our money's worth with the full ride.

I'm trying to figure out gearing because I figure running my usual 42x11-32 wont be enough

I added the Roadlink 11 to my Ultegra 8000 derailleur and plan to run a 11-40 XTR cassette...

i have no doubt that your fitness is better than mine, but i'm thinking right around mile 15 you're going to be wanting lower than 42x32...

Tell that to the single speeders who will, no doubt, show up to shame us all! Watching Jesse Quagliaroli crush the climbs at Keystone Gravel last year on, I think, 42x18 was insane. Granted, once he'd finished the ride, he noticed that he'd cracked his IF frame in the process! #toomuchpower

Pryor definitely knows how to put a ride together. Last year was the 9th annual Monkey Knife Fight - I've ridden all the roads on different rides, but the way he strings them together makes it really frigging hard. And if he says unPAved is choice gravel, I tend to trust him until proven otherwise. (He's also pretty good at rest-stops and after parties!)

Schwalbe G-One 35mm for me, I think. Unless weather looks nasty, then probably switch to 650b Terrene Elwood 47mm. Pressure TBD by how fat and useless I feel on the day. Should have a new 700c gravel wheelset by then so looking forward to trying it out on a long ride.

sounds good.

i should have my Swan completed by then, and will likely run something in the 35c range also. from the pictures, the roads look to be well groomed and smooth. hopefully nothing too gnarly.

I think Selene and Dave said there are some rough spots that are a bit bombed out, but doesn't sound awful. When I hear more, I'll let you know.

700x35mm G-One for me as well, or Kenda Flintridge 700x40mm if it's wet
