If the CyclingTips guys are to be believed, it was a German paper that mentioned Lance unprompted and the story grew from there.

But those who hate him won't change their mind, so I'll leave it at that.

...as stated previously, nothing but public relations

When Italy idolizes/admires an Ivan Basso and ‘disgraces’ Pantani, then we get what we got,” Armstrong said. “When Germany idolizes/admires an Erik Zabel or a Rolf Aldag and ‘disgraces’ Jan Ullrich, then we get what we’re getting now. And I suppose the same could be said for the comparison of George [Hincapie] and me.

it's possible that people, even those whose general being you dislike, are capable of empathy or compassion.

I also caught that piece in the podcast and it seemed unprompted and sincere. In the course of their conversation Jan came up and LA said it and explained why. People are complicated and he can be a royal dick to some and very compassionate to others. I don't think LA is a saint by any means but in relation to this topic I think he was sincere.

“Lance Armstrong is very interested in the fate of Jan, has kept up to date and says that the cycling community has to stick together,” Hoppe said

Translation: "Hey, look! Someone even more screwed up than me! And I'm trying to help him! See? See?"

LA can can feel and what he wants. I'm ambivalent regarding LA's agenda. However I do feel he maybe putting the cart before the horse regarding his ole buddy Jan and here's why. Doing drugs is a terrible scapeboat for hitting women and supporting prostitution.

BUT, in spite of all this, if LA DOES use his influence and $ to help Ullrich, that would be a good thing..I don't wish a Pantani type ending for anybody.

Prior to Jan hitting the news this time, even during the 2017 Stages podcasts, Lance had spoken of his fondness for Jan, talking about how he came to Postal's post tour party to pay respects. I think the affection is genuine. Whether the current publicity is motivated solely by that is open to debate, I guess.

This is the same Lance Armstrong - who is now talking about compassion - who tried to hire Ivan Basso and repeatedly ridiculed Marco Pantani and called him "Elefantino"

Where's the interrobang on the keyboard?

This is the same Lance Armstrong
