almost invisible welds huh?
I think though, it might be because there are no welds at all, and that is a carbon bike William posted a pic of. |

Actually the post I quoted was from the first page of this thread. The images didn't show up in my post for some reason.

Anyone have one? Use for fireroads and singletrack as well as road? Wondering what setups look like and how big of a tire can be run . . .

I'm starting to get a little bit of breathing room and spending more time on Paceline...lurking of course. If I ever have anything to offer I will but there is so much experience here I can rarely add much.
I have started adding bikes to the Showcase and will continue to do so. I invite everyone to ask any questions they may have. Thanks Paceline! http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=160948 |

It seems that Ti tubing has gotten larger in diameter in the past few years. Most noticeably the bigger head tubes to accommodate for tapered fork tubes. How much does this stiffen and affect the ride of the Ti frames? How often do you use butted Ti tubing and does a frame built with butted Ti ride differently then a straight gauge frame? Thanks and looking forward to your knowledge here on Paceline.

The larger head tubes may stiffen things up a bit but the tapered forks have a more of an effect. I think they are great as long as the person is heavy enough. I still like to keep lighter riders on a 1.125" steerer when I can. With Ti frames the tubes in general are larger than earlier Ti frames which were notorious for being "whippy". I think most builders caught on and we all use pretty similar tubing diameters these days. I do use butted tubes when weight is one of a riders top priorities. It adds cost and reduces dent resistance for a weight savings of about 3oz. so most of my customers opt for the more durable straight gauge. Seems most people are attracted to Ti these days as much for it's robust nature as anything else. |

Speaking of tubing, Carl posted up a grey chart with great info on many different types of tube sets...
