I just found the full video posted by Brunelle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9aOG53ZIV8.

"The bike is the #1 priority!"

kind of a dumb question, but here it goes: picture of the bikes on the car rack shows that they removed the pedals - why (for fit/space)?

Appeared to be a rather warm day for ice biking.

Solid self rescue.

This is pretty typical of Lucas. He's done it quite a few times and definitely is known for doing crazy stuff on the bike.

I was in Boston for the 5 days leading up to this and it was definitely freezing cold. Especially on the river. I stayed the Liberty hotel which is right on the river and you couldnt step outside without getting ripped apart by the ice wind! I dont remember the 20th being a very warm day; it definitely wasnt as cold as the days prior, though I did notice that the river clearly wasnt frozen in a bunch of spots.

Totally fits this guy's MO....and for someone who is allegedly that experienced with riding on frozen water, he should've known exactly where to ride/not-ride. The fact that he had a camera following him perfectly, one rigged on the bike, and was clearly well equipped to extricate himself tells me it was all to get clicks/eyeballs.

Seems like it worked.
I skimmed the responses and missed yours - but your question is along the lines of my 2nd one regarding the pedals.

In my case, I'm a fair weather paddler.

If the snow tires are on the quattro and the outdoor shower has been winterized:
  • Tthe kayaks are stored for the winter in the garage.
  • The mountain bike and the cyclocross bikes are ready to get dirty.
  • The mesh trail shoes are stashed, and the winter trail shoes are by the door.
  • The water skis are (um, never owned any) and the cross country skis are waxed or lubricated.
  • The Fiskar is ready to chop wood (well, that's true year round)
HAR! Nothing wrong with that. In fact, I just recently moved and sold the last of my kayaks - a custom boat that I thought I'd never get rid of, but go figure.....

Two years ago a friend and I made a pact to kayak every month of the winter. On the coastal ponds on Martha's Vineyard, much of the water is shallow enough to stand up in. We were pretty careful where we went and ended up only having to dodge ice one time. It was fun.

Haha....I used to have a ritual of riding with a bunch of friends every month at midnight on the night of the full moon up to the Waffle House to eat waffles with the truckers. Does that count????

Great hotel. Did you get one of the rooms with bars and the door that locks from the outside? I think those are the older rooms.

My local kettle pond is 2.5 miles around and 70' deep in the middle. It's a great place for a kayak workout but...I'm not going there in winter.

Not this past time, but I did a few months ago! That was interesting!

Absolute truth! I sailed on the Charles a ton in college. My crew fell in one day - first question once we got to shore was "when was your last tetanus shot?" It used to reek to high heaven some days, your gear would get so nasty. Much nicer these days.
