A new cycling risk?

Or maybe a new obstacle to be added to a cyclocross course?

That water isn't warm any time of year. It'll make for a memory. At least the bike and rider weren't pulled in.

The bike almost went. It looked like a silly place to attempt to ride given the weather and the surf on the lake.

people have absolutely gone in the water there.
in the winter when it's typically icy on that corner... Oak St curve is off-camber toward the lake.

Operator error has always been a risk.

Lake Michigan is no joke. As someone who lives near it in west Michigan it claims the lives of dozens of folks each year. And that's in the summer when it's warm. This time of year would really be bad news if it sucks you in.

Yeah that stretch is no joke in the winter. I helped pull a guy out of the water a bit north of there about 20 years ago in February.

The rider was probably thinking, “well thank God it isn’t salt water so my bb and hubs should be ok for another year”.

I have gone down hard on the ice on that curve and skidded towards the water. Not fun.

Another time I was walking my dog along the lake at Recreation Drive at 5am (jet lagged after returning from England) and heard a girl yelling from beyond the sea wall. She had fallen into the lake and somehow not gone through the ice. Fire dept got her out. Scary stuff.

The Brits have been doing it for years, according to this old classic:

Water hazard starts just after three minutes
