I ordered a new trainer to help with my collarbone recovery
So I am thinking would I would use the 89 Bottecchia for it .
I know I will be busy ripping it down I will place towels on it to catch sweat
And maybe use a slightly oiled rag to wipe the frame down with ,anyway the question is ......
What do you guys do who ride steel on trainers ?

Get a sweat catcher for sure. Put grease on water bottle bolts, if you have cable stops that can fill up with sweat. Treat them with some kind of grease or oil. And what most people forget is your BB will collect sweat also.

I road a surly pacer for years on the trainer. not to much rust, but some.

does it have vertical dropouts? I have a Centurion Semi-pro with horizontal chrome dropouts on my kickr and to keep the bike on the trainer I had to get a real QR and clamp it down pretty hard. Turns out that's bad, because the axle isn't made for it. I'm not sure why they would have changed this part of the design, but maybe they have. Currently in the process of building up another bike that has vertical dropouts.

Nothing like sprinting hard and having your bike come off the trainer. I somehow managed to catch myself both times it happened, or it could have gotten ugly for the kicker/bike/or me.

Otherwise the bike has been great on there, wish I could keep using it.

I did it for about a year and got rust in the bb. I did what others suggested except I didn't grease the seatpost so that's likely how sweat got into the bb shell. About five years ago, I picked up a 2009ish Serotta Fierte Ti for $800. I rode it for a few years then put it on the KICKR when I moved to Arizona. I can sweat all over it.

if it's going to be a dedicated trainer bike, but you still want to protect it...just wrap the tubes and whatever other vulnerable points with saran-wrap/equivalent. also, religiously use a big fan that moves a ton of air, to minimize the drippings before they hit your bike.

i've been doing this for +15 years...my steel bottecchia is the same condition as when i started. honestly, i probably should re-do it as it's not quite as all-enveloping as it once was as i swapped parts thru the years. #timecapsule

Serious perspiration management requires a serious fan. And headbands that are changed out about every 15 minutes during hard trainer riding. And gloves.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

I ordered some 80's sweat band, and my wife makes fun of me. Love them when on the trainer. They help keep sweat off eyes alot. When were busy at work i even put one on as a joke but they are GOLD !!!

I've actually just put an old shirt over top tube and a towel over handlebars, could probably do better...
