Whatever hit him in the head opened a small gash above the eye. Stitches on the face are no fun, in my experience, but not, in themselves such a big deal. What we cannot tell from the picture is what happened inside his head. I'm in no position to say whether he was in good shape to ride or not. But it's at least possible that he was having real problems.

if you look closely you'll notice that it's actually dr doofus on the right, not sandy. the copy of the nichomachean ethics tucked under the arm gives it away.
