eTap front derailleur battery relocate

Hello,

Was wondering if anyone has seen a company develop a battery relocator as to allow some frames to run larger tires?

This is probably what’s stopping most people from running etap Hydro groupsets on gravel bikes.

Cheers,
Alex

haven't seen one. not sure it's worth doing as my hunch would be that Sram will eventually develop a 1X eTap group for the gravel/CX market. possibly even redesigning the FD for the few gravel riders that use one.

I know there's a handful of CX pros who've been racing eTap for a couple years. and here's an awesome gravel bike with it, where you can check out clearance: https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=213603&

From that thread: "Honestly I think in my case I would be safe with a 35c tire. More than that there will be critical interference problems."

That's a non-starter for most PacNW gravel.

As for the "few gravel riders that use one" part, around here it's reversed.

I can see the possibility. Prototype can be made from the placeholder plastic that comes with the derailleur when new.

I'm not sold on 1X for my needs so extra clearance would be nice. I run Shimano and the bulk of the front derailleur does limit my fender placement.

Good evening. I am the owner of the referenced post. So I tried 38mm and it works. But I think that’s the limit. Obviously depends also on your chainstay length but for an average 420-425mm chainstay i would say 38mm is the max. I heard English Cycles had a bike with the FD battery relocated. If I find it I will post it. Good luck

I had someone design one. I’ve been using it with zero issues other than being ugly! You can see it mounted on the seat tube.

I can mount it out of sight like under the BB, but I think it would be a little risky down there. I’ve tried different locations, but haven’t found the best spot yet. I tried it here too.

The people that figured out how to make the shimano di2 and campy eps wiring look neat and tidy will figure this one out in time too no doubt.

All they need to do is redesign the FD a bit so the battery doesn’t hang inboard so much.

Edit: even just a new battery shaped differently should solve the issue.

I’m sure by the time I pull the trigger on a gravel bike that SRAM will fix this problem.

Still no fix that I can find. This is the Front derailleur, how big of a battery does it need? It's not uncommon to use the front but a few times on a ride. I would think they could make a battery half as deep as the current one to solve the issue.

2 contacts? not a big deal to relocate, just need to fabricate the plates.
i think the best spot is just to have it loop over the top and mount the battery in the front and maybe down. makes it somewhat universal
if that's too ugly, i'd just put it in the 'armpit' of the st and dt. out of sight.
