How do you decide which bike to ride?
For you guys with many bikes to choose from? How do you decide on which bike to ride on a given day?

If I ride on
dirt... I ride my gravel bike. Mosaic XT-1 road... I ride my Festka One Classic road w/ kids or for an errand... Desalvo. It is going to get a little more complicated when I get my 44 27+ mountain bike but I think there is a good place in the stable for that one.

For road rides, it usually boils down first to the terrain and gearing required, and next to personal preference.

I only ride on the road and it's usually a steel bike which is most often 1 of 2 Serottas. This morning it was 40 miles on the Colorado 2. Saturday morning group ride has some fast guys so it's carbon fiber to keep up on the hills= Cervelo R3. That leaves some more steel for the Sunday morning group ride and when alone. A couple of guys ride aluminum on Sunday but I am the only one with steel. They might make silly comments about my steel bike. I ignore them. And pass them.
Sometimes it boils down to which one can I get out of the garage and pedaling with the least effort. I pretty much say to myself that my favorite bike is the one I am on at the moment. |

Titanium disc brakes and fat tires for foul weather.
Stainless steel when the weather warms up for the road. Carbon and titanium for the trails year round depending on the amount of snow. |

I have a few road bikes and purposely ride each one in a a semi-deliberate rotation so each is ridden about the same amount every year.
I do not want to have a nice bike that only gets taken out a few times a year...if that is the use rate i dont see the need to keep a hook for it or tie up the cost in the frame, build and wheels... which, I guess is why I can't rationalize why folks have N>5....I think 2-3 is the right number of exact same type (ex: rim brake road stage race geo) and now me at 4 is creating some kind of internal debate... |

No system, I rarely have to think about it. I’ll usually have an itch to get a particular one on the road or when I go into the stable, it will be obvious which one needs to be ridden.
