New car, need a new rack
Just brought home a 2017 VW Golf SEL, so of course I need a new bike rack. I've use a Yakima round bar setup from 20+ years ago for every car in between by just swapping out clips. It looks like Yakima has moved on from the Q clips. The ones I'd need aren't made or in stock anywhere.
What are people with this car (or any 2015+ Golf) using? Anyone use the roundbar adapters from Yakima? Any trunk rack suggestions? Thanks! Last edited by makoti; 05-26-2018 at 10:37 AM. |

The basic Hollywood Rack works as well or better than some of my more complex/expensive models. They are easily moved/adapted to almost any car.

Does the Golf have roof rails? Thule makes a product called rail riders which I use on a TSX SW. I suspect Yakima makes a similar product.

SeaSucker. Then you'll never have to buy a new rack when you get a new car.
Fits every vehicle and goes on and comes off in seconds. |

If you're looking for a trunk rack, a Saris Bones 3 fits nicely on my '12 GTI. That said, you might want to add some padding around the holders, as they will scratch/scuff the paint on your bikes.
Honestly, though, the best answer is having a hitch installed and getting a Kuat or OneUp. Last edited by jtbadge; 05-26-2018 at 04:27 PM. |

I've got a hitch with a Kuat rack on my '12 GTI. I also have a Thule aeroblade roof rack system with 3x Rocky Mount fork mounted carriers.
I'd probably buy a 1-up rack if buying at retail prices. Was hard to justify buying a 1-up rack at retail when the shop I work at sells Kuats and I could get at wholesale. I also would consider a seasucker rack, especially if you live somewhere corrosive/salty like I do (coastal FL) it will be easier to take on and off, and perhaps live a longer life due to not being in the environment all the time. |

No rails on the roof.
The bars I have are 60". The suggested width is 48". Other than being wide, any reason to worry about that? It won't live on the car. I'd use it rather infrequently. |

I had never heard of these. Suction cups? And they stay on without deforming the metal on the roof?

Seasucker

There happens to be one in the classifieds for a banging price (no relation) If I did not already have one I would have purchased it |

Trunk racks? Yeesh!!
Whatever you do, don't butcher the car like. Reciever is probably the best option |

A lot depends on how you want to use it, but I’m starting to like the seasucker minibomber I got recently. Easy on, easy off. Well thought out, if totally different. Worth considering, at least.

Have you considered a hitch mount rack?

just watching a few videos, it looks like you'd need to take it off when you get to where ever you are going to ride & re-install for the ride home, or it could easily walk.

No hitch. Don't plan to install one, so no.
