FYI - For some of the racks mentioned, if you are an REI member, wait until they have the "20% any full price item" coupons.....this is usually the only time you can get some of these racks at a discount.....for a $500 rack, that can be significant.

I've got a 1UP that I'm not using if you have any interest. It's the 1 bike rack only.

As others have said, tray rack for sure. I shopped Küat nv 2.0 vs 1UP, and ended up getting a better deal on the Küat. No regrets.

I got a Spirit roof box, T2 rack, and the T2 two bike extension, each with the coupon....so Thule was not excluded as of about 5 yrs ago

You are correct though, some items are excluded....

I picked up a Yakima Dr Tray and only think it is OK. I dont have a comparison though.
I have a difficult time operating the button that allows you to adjust the front wheel clamp and unless I sit it up against the front brake, I cant seem to make it so the bike doesn't have the ability to roll a little. The directions say the arm should be about an inch from the brake....
Also, my GF was not strong enough to pull the mechanism that allows you to fold the rack. It takes quite a grip.

My 1 up is doing this. Even changed out the guide bars from smooth to toothed. Happens with skinny road tires too. My rack is old. Wondering how to fix this problem.

Back to the fender question.

Looks like most of the tray style wont be able to accommodate fendered bikes?

i would suspect not, at least any of the racks that secure the wheels by squeezing the tires. i only know of this thule that's a tray rack that holds anything other than the wheels.

There are many platform (tray) receiver racks that are designed for "frame mount" (frame capture). Swagman, Thule, Yakima, Saris have at least one model. Swagman was one of the original platform rack companies but they missed the "no touch/no clamp" carbon movement which is when platform racks really took off.

I inherited a Thule T2 from an ex- GF.

Thing's built like a tank all right. Since I never take it off, I don't worry about stashability.

A 29er X 2.3 is a little big for the first gen racks, but will work for anything smaller just fine

Just like a roof rack, buy one used. Unless they get hit, they don't wear out.
