I like Prana and specifically the Brion short a lot. Great quality, really nice fit and two different inseam lengths to choose from. REI also makes some nice shorts that are priced a little lower, but not by much.

I like BDU shorts - they are roomy and the reinforced seat wears like iron.

Seems to me that a most important feature for a short used for cycling would be an adjustable waist, so that a belt isn't needed.
A belt traps a lot of sweat where clothing layers may already be overlapping, so better to make the waistband part of the short do the job. On the ~$20 Dickies ripstop shorts, the price is so low that I don't mind having to stich a cinch fold into the waist band or just use a zip tie or Velcro strap to allow the shorts to hold themselves up. My shirt covers that part anyway so it doesn't have to stand out. The Dickies RipStop shorts are thin/light/durable and can be ordered direct from Dickies with free shipping, even on a very $mall order. |

I picked up 3 pairs of these Gerry shorts at Costco. Nylon and a little stretchy. They are cut above the knee and narrower in the leg then baggy cargo shorts.

The Swrve shorts are worth it, I have two pairs and the second I paid full price for.

I wear a pair of Haglöfs shorts meant for water sports. Very thin and stretchy fabric. A bit long, so trimmed them with a pair of scissors. Also wear them with suspenders to keep them up and avoid a belt

Lots of good suggestions, thanks!
I was at REI yesterday and picked up these at 40% off https://www.rei.com/product/113492/c...ll-shorts-mens Dickies 874 are my go-to right now, or Patagonia baggies, but the mesh of the Patagonia get a bit bunched up. Dickies are OK but wish they had a bit of stretch/gusset crotch. |

Zoom in on the gray-colored panel to better see that the fabric on these is fairly light and supple. Again, the pockets work great while riding.

Are there any casual, comfortable short-pants that don't work on a bike?

A heavy or stiff fabric seems like a boo-boo as well. The pockets need depth, not all shorts have deep enough pockets to keep stuff from falling out while cycling! I tried a lot of different shorts over the years (still have several of them) and found the ripstop shorts were the best for cycling, and I like the look. |
