Shallow vs deep rim for resto-mod? (Or, how much silver is too much)
I'm considering what rims to go for while building up my rb-1, and had the thought "how much silver is too much".
I like the idea of silver rims, but realized that something like a velocity quill or h+son archetype will be much bigger visually, than say a pacenti brevet or h+son tb14. Anyone have photos floating around of combinations that look nice? ... Maybe I can offset the silver by fitting a 650x42 tan wall or something ![]() For reference, some related threads: I asked about durable anodized rims jtbadge's excellent rb-1 with black archetypes Last edited by eephotog; 02-02-2023 at 11:36 AM. |

Well, I say just go with what you like that gives you the look and feel you want.
I've got several older steel frames running medium depth silver rims and like it. Deeper than your old classic box rims. ![]() ![]() I've got Zonda's on the Fishlips now but originally had these on it. ![]() I'm working on this old beauty and would love to score some old 8 Speed silver Shamal's for it. ![]() Last edited by jamesdak; 01-31-2023 at 10:38 AM. |

I have those silver H Plus Son Archetype rims on the Lemond I just built up and frankly I think they look beautiful! Stunning in the sunlight.
I had them built up with Velo Orange high-flange hubs for even more silver action. They look like the vintage wheels I used to ride in the '80s and '90s. I think they're pretty great. ![]() ![]() |

Not mine, but to me, this is the gold standard.

Just perfect, isn't it? Are those Astral rims, or Velocity?

I’ve been happy with my Pacenti Forza Classico wheels, which are 25mm deep (and 20mm internal width). Pics on page 2 of this thread:

This guy does some really nice polished Shamals which are kind of deep. Great work on groups as well.

You know, any time I ask for advice here, instead of narrowing it down, I end up with more "good ideas".
Love the photos so far, keep em coming. Here's what it looks like for the moment, but I gotta admit, all-black with tan walls is compelling. |

You could do grey ano on the Archetypes to tone them down a little. I have them on the Merckx ti (that I'm selling - see classifieds

On the topic of grey rims, the shamal ultra TI are also pretty cool.
ebay link had decent photos ![]() Or the Ritchey Zeta Classic, but those seem discontinued in rim-brake. Last edited by eephotog; 02-02-2023 at 12:24 PM. |

Silver: These are Velocity Quills that are satin versus polished.
