Waterford RS-22 Team Raleigh Replica - 64cm

Yes, it is possible to have both Peg-23 and RSV (Richard Schwinn Virus) concurrently - though I'm figuring one is going to have more staying power than the other..

Uh, well, setting aside the meme du jour around here - this one seemed destined to land in my garage eventually. I talked the son of the original owner about it back in 2018 but passed on it at that point because I was riding more drop - and even when it was first posted here last year, I passed again for the same reason, plus I was riding less setback and the reach wasn't right there. And then I got injured - and finally more setback, less reach, and more stack actually made sense, meaning the bike finally made sense - which is how I found myself bringing it in in the midst of the great Pegoretti adventure of 2023. I'll be honest, the french fit is a little off-putting for someone with severe aesthetic obsessions. But it works and gives me a more relaxed and comfortable riding experience. And that's what matters right now.

Enough backstory though, let's get to the bike!

It was commissioned in 2015 and built with a combo of stainless steel and OS tubing. The BB drop is 75mm, wheelbase is 1017.5mm, STA of 73, HTA of 72.5, rake of 45mm, 415mm stays, 212mm headtube, and 58cm TT. Internal brake routing. And it clears 32mm GP4000s (the mega fat ones) under eeBrakes..

The previous owner had it souped up with some Bora Ultras and those eeBrakes - but had it more upright and w much wider bars, so I had some work to do to get it where I want it, which is mixing up some retro looks with modern performance bits, and saving some of the other parts for other builds.

Here's where it landed:
  • Campagnolo Record 11 groupset w R11 HO RD, Chorus 11-32, and Chorus brakes
  • Campagnolo SRM PM-7 w 39/53
  • Phil Wood wheelset, hand-built w butted spokes and Velocity A23 rims by Peter White, Conti GP4K 25s (that ride like 28s), and Campagnolo window skewers of course
  • SMP Composit Carbon
  • Specialized S-Works seatpost
  • Specialized S-Works stem 130x12 (needs swapped to 120)
  • Zipp SC SL-80 Ergo 42cm
  • King SS cages

Today was the first ride - and it was quite nice.. Very comfortable and stable, and surprisingly spritely despite its bit of heft. Descends great and holds speed well, and climbs nicely too (Jan would say it planes).

Of course the 39/53 isn't ideal for inspiring roll-about rides. And that'll get changed out shortly with the rest of the group to a Chorus 12 wide-range setup. It really wasn't all that bad with the 11-32 actually, which is good since this groupset is headed to the Fina Estampa I think and that one will do well with the gear range and attitude it brings.

I dig the way it looks - even though I have no frame of reference for the Team Raleigh tie-in.. beyond seeing some photos, I don't know the riders or history or anything. But the polished SS sure is sweet. And the rest of it does really tie together nicely.

Apropos the other dialogue today out there, the curved fork is quite supple - and no shudder under heavy braking down 15% grades. Gotta love rim brakes and quality construction.

Anyway, this one should be fun for a bit, maybe more. I certainly wouldn't mind if it were like 2cm shorter. Do I need it beyond the rehab? Maybe. Maybe not. I do need to keep something around that helps make easy days easy. Or maybe it's just a tester for finally getting another custom steel frame/fork done.. or maybe the virus will mutate again and a 60cm Luigino will get posted for sale tomorrow.

Just overall, so like 63ish x 58ish w 190ish HT - I'd still put the bars and saddle in the same place, it'd just look a little more proper.

Nice - looks quite proper. Maybe more Merckx-fit than French-fit, if I understand them right.

What's the total seat tube length?

Nice bike! And speaking of TI-Raleigh (if only tangentially), I strongly recommend Chris Sidwells' latest:

I saw your note on that in the original FS thread - we'll figure something out when it's time.. maybe even some form of tradeage: TI-Raleigh for Ti-rarity..

I see Hed Belgium in place of the A23. Not that the A23s aren't great rims, just wrong class for that steed.

I've heard if you don't treat the RSV promptly it can morph into the ATMO variant. Very dangerous.

Take two shots of carbon fiber resin and call us in the morning.
