One thing I was surprised by is how stacked and precise the aluminum welds are.. maybe that's fashion over function, but I'll take it - no puddles to be found.

Okay, so I made the highly rational assessment that letting this one go would be beyond silly.. so now I have it stripped down and ready for its rebirth.

Stay tuned.

I credit these threads with the refreshed offer I just got from TPC on my Duende. It's offensively low, but that's what they do.....and I'm not selling.

But just goes to show they pay attention to the market for these fellas.

and btw, I feel you on the gearing comments. The Jerk had a 25 on the Duende and I rode it up Mt Soledad a few times. It hurt like hell but I destroyed my prior times. 25yr old me is disgusted that I swapped to a 34t, but I'm too old to care

Right? I can remember climbing Mount Baldy in a 39x25 and feeling like I'd put on the "little" chainring since it wasn't a 42. Now I'd want a 34x34. Almost thirty years later!

haha....well I distinctly remember the guffaws and dirty looks I got from my riding buddies when I put a 27t on in 2003 when we spent a week chasing the TdF through the Pyrenees. No one was laughing when I had that extra gear, but it hurts my knees just thinking about all the climbing we did that week on relatively tiny gears (Tourmalet, Luz-Ardiden, Col d'Aspin, Peyresourde, Hautacam, and many more....)

Sorry Clean.....thread drift. the FE looks great.....can't wait to see what the next build is!

Wow - an updated, fresh build and a new fork did wonders for the Fina.....it's definitely been added to my list of bikes that I hope end up in the classifieds one day. Enjoy!

Had to leave it uncut.. got a used cut one (perfect length) coming that surfaced a day after I bought this brand new one

That is a nice looking bike there. I'd go with different cages (black King SS), but that's about it.

OK, one could wonder what you could do with playing around with the bar tape color - maybe something matching the Fina lettering?

Totally unrelated question, more a general one about how Dario back in the day got feedback on how his bikes rode - this is an assumption, but he didn't seem to ride himself in his last few decades, so how did he know how his bikes were working out? Especially when going into new materials, like aluminum and stainless steel. This bike being an example. Did Dario or one of his staff ever get on one of these and say, yeah, that's what we have in mind. Or decide it was what they were after? Maybe he had the geometry dialed in and just applied that to the different materials. And maybe he made enough custom frames for pros over the years to know what custom geo worked and what didn't.

Just curious. I know a lot of builders still ride a lot, Dave Kirk and Richie Sachs come to mind, but it didn't seem like Dario was riding his bikes for a while. Correct me if I'm way off base.

The cages, yeah, about those.. When I first built up the bike after getting it from TPC I only put one cage on for a shake-down ride. After rebuilding yesterday I went to put the second cage on and the bolt just spun the riv-nut in the frame. It appears the TPC mechanic tightened it more than needed when getting it ready to ship. After some headscratching, I decided to just get at it with a dremel and see what I could do. Forty or so heavily puckering minutes later, I have the bolt head delicately cut away, the remaining bolt shaft turned out, and the riv-nut head smoothed. From there I did the QR riv-nut fix, using a spare front thru axle to bind against. It seems tight now and all is right with the world again - after having the potential to go horribly sideways. I have Calfee carbon cages that could go on it, I just threw the Dave-O Arundels on as an easy training-bike solution.

I'm not a colored bar-tape guy though. To me there are only two acceptable colors - black and white. And I like black on this one.

All it needs now is a WR Compositi 31mm seatpost w setback and it's done.

That's a good question. I can only imagine that his relationships and skills came together to produce what we have but I really do not have a clue. Maybe Mr. Sachs or others can tell that story..

I do know that the geometry really hasn't changed going way back - just some concessions to a bit more chainstay length.

The archives across the hall - smoked-out section especially - have some choice material for reading. Or come out to Portland in August. The Pegoretti team will be there and I'm sure they could fill the details in.

Okay, so, I posted an updated pic but not an updated ride review.. and I know y'all are on tendie-hooks waiting for that.

tl;dr - it rides like a slightly stiffer Marcelo.. or maybe that's just the tires.

I did two rides over the weekend on it in the setup. Both in the 1-2 hr range and both over a mix of rolling terrain combined with steep (20%) climbs and long flowy descents (40+ mph), with both good tarmac and chonky broken stuff.

Off the bat I need to note that if I had to choose between the 2013 Marcelo and this one, I'd take the Marcelo every day of the week - assuming I wasn't worried about binning it or destroying it with the conditions of the day.

I also need to note that the biggest difference in the build between the two is the Marcelo was set up with 27mm ENVE tubeless tires on wide ID ENVE 5.6s, where the Fina Estampa can only take measured 25s on the Shamal Ultras - limited by how close one is willing to put a tire to the seat-tube moreso than the width or height at the brakes/stays (meaning on wider ID rims a slightly plumpier tire may be possible if it spreads and flattens a bit).

So, what I mainly felt between the two was a bit more nervous and tight handling on the Fina Estampa - not bad and not objectively nervous or tight, just slightly less planted feeling than the Marcelo. I'm chalking that up to a combination of the different tires, the slightly shorter chainstays on the Fina Estampa, and a slightly longer stem.

The good part is the Fina Estampa rides amazingly well and does everything the Marcelo does as far as sprinting, climbing, and descending just the way you want a performance bike to do. Without trying, I had some climbing PRs on it on both mid-distance/mid-grade climbs, and shorter/steeper stuff. It doesn't feel harsh at all, even with the narrower tires. And I love the way it looks.

All told, if I just had the Fina Estampa, I'd be more than happy with it as a N=1 performance road bike, provided I didn't need the extra sure-footedness that comes with wider tires (perceived or real).

But since I have the 2013 Marcelo as a hard-edge performance rider, the Fina Estampa is a bit duplicative - other than that it is inert in the wetness of the PNW and is a little less precious to me than the Marcelo, so I'm more likely to pick the Fina Estampa for races or rides where the risk of crashes or damage are increased.

Vintage Clean would say: "I don't need both, time to sell.."

Current Clean is saying: "It's okay to have it just to have it and to enjoy looking at it and have the spare-bike option available when needed"

And that's where I'm landing now.
