Anyone else breaking Chorus 12 FD cages?
Recently my front downshifting began to degrade, turns out that the outer cage broke at the junction with the spring. This is the second time it has happened, the first one after fewer than 3500 miles, this one lasted nearly 12k. Never having broken a FD cage in 45 years I'm inclined to think it's a design failure, so curious to know if any of you have similar experience.
More importantly, has anyone had similar failure with a Record or SR 12 FD? I don't mind paying a premium for a new one if I can be confident it won't suffer the same fate. Thanks. Last edited by cgolvin; 02-01-2023 at 06:38 PM. |

Given that the higher tier groups are generally about weight savings, I'd be surprised that they prove more durable than Chorus.

I've got SR 12 speed on the Bishop, almost 2 years and 13,825 miles without a problem. I will say that here in North Texas I ride on flat to rolling terrain and many rides I don't use the front derailleur so there's not a lot of wear and tear on it.

No issues yet but I do notice some of the steel fittings on the brakes and derailleurs corrode easier than previous models.

Wait, now I'm confused. The front of the cage is CF? It appears the campag tech documents call this forged aluminum. Is it really cf?

Nope, my error, it's aluminum (OP corrected).

Do you mind linking where you originally posted a pic of the break or maybe re-post? I've got Chorus and Record 12 running for my wife and brother, neither of them would welcome a field failure let alone know what to do about it.

I haven't had any issues with C12 FDs...though I don't get nearly as many miles as the OP.
Though I am 3 for 3 on C12 crank bolts being loose from the factory and creaking while climbing.

I assume you are talking about chainring bolts. Unless they were complete bikes and the "factory" installed the cranks.

Is the height of the FD correct? Could the bolt have slipped?

Where’s the hand up emoji?
Have a lovely colnago c59 with a broken record 12 fd in my garage as we speak. I’m a campy fanboy, but I’ve had problems with carbon record and super record fd’s on 11sp cages breaking too. That was the plastic part that holds the cage together problem, not a spring problem.

ott@campagnolona.com Yup, that piece on 11s ders was an issue..why I always recommended Chorus or even Athena or Centaur...which worked fine but were all metal.
