Russia banned from 2018 Winter Olympics over systematic doping

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/05/s...-olympics.html

I guess the IOC got a lot of backlash for not taking action before the 2016 Summer Games, so they needed to show that they were taking this seriously.

"Now the sports world will wait to see how Russia responds. Some Russian officials have threatened to boycott if the I.O.C. delivered such a severe punishment."
How can you boycott an event from which you've been banned?

Any athletes from Russia who receive special dispensation to compete will do so as individuals wearing a neutral uniform, and the official record books will forever show that Russia won zero medals.
Don't show up at all, no athletes.

Have Russian officials been banned, or only athletes? There are many sporting federation officials, committee members, judges, etc. who happen to be Russian, but are not members of the Russian sports teams.

Note: The International Olympic Committee is only a marketing and licensing organization. They do not organize or run any sports. Every sport at the Olympics is organized and run by the associated international sports federation (such the UCI for cycling). It is highly likely that there are many Russians serving as members of international sports federations for sports included in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

"The country’s government officials are forbidden to attend, its flag will not be displayed at the opening ceremony and its anthem will not sound."

Members of national sports federations are not government officials (well, not in most countries, anyway).

Putin's already sent the internal memo out to the athletes: if you participate as an individual, enjoy your new apartment in Siberia.

I’ve always said - if the hacking doesn’t get them, the doping will!

Because the IOC still lets them compete, just not under their country flag.

So I guess doping while training to reach Olympic qualifying standards...then competing with a plain jersey is ok??

Actually, I think its competitors who have not been doping, or so their record states. The ones who have a record can not compete.

Did you read the article?

Quote:
In barring Russia’s team, Olympic officials left the door open for some Russian athletes. Those with histories of rigorous drug testing may petition for permission to compete in neutral uniforms.
In other words, Russian athletes who by fate or by choice have had the same scrutiny as those from other countries.

Never read any article...but if any of the testing has been by Russian's or in Russia....don't expect accurate results.
