Floyd / Teammate Question

Floyd said he was in trouble from the very beginning of today's stage. I'm guessing his team knew this. Has there been an explanation as to why he was alone when he started the final climb, etc. Where was his team?

Would it have made a difference? Could he have been helped under the circumstances? Etc.

Next question. Have there been more "bad days" this year than in the past? Are we seeing a more "normal" race ? In other words what a race looks like without all the "supplements".

no. you are seeing a normal race with all the supplements present. the only difference is that not all of the supplementees are present.

this is however "normal".

most riders have a "bad day" or two during the tour,
but when Lance, Jan, and Ivan are up the road,
nobody on the tee vee seems to notice...they just
slip out of view of the camera.

But two famous ones were,
Indurain in '96 tour: BOOM! lost about 5 minutes early in mtns, never recovered.
Ullrich in '98 stage 15: lost 9 minutes when he Popped

Cadel did the same thing in the Giro when he was in Pink. I forget, 2001 or 2002 I think? The first year Paulo won and Tyler was 2nd.

_when_you have a bad day matters too. on a flat stage, bad days don't lose you boatloads of time. but on a mountain stage, oh boy. and where on a mountain you blow matters too. lance blew on the Col de Joux-Plane in 2000 but he blew with only 2 or 3 kms to go. floyd blew with over 10kms to go. = carnage. sadly, floyd blew on a terrible day and time.
