If you want to maximize the amount of biking, you could even start in Chatham or Millburn and still avoid a lot of the aggro between the Hudson and there.

Rt611 is currently closed (the first road you get into in PA). I don't know if you'll be able to pass by bike. There was heavy erosion and road deterioration during the large rain storms we had over spring.

I'll probably regret this later but I think I prefer to ride all the way from the city.

I updated the direct route from gwb - any opinions?

Was thinking of taking a ferry to Hoboken or taking the SI ferry and going through Goethals, but would probably be way too late of a start.

Probably not too bad as far as a route from the GWB west goes, but I would gladly skip the first 40 or 50 km of that ride.

^ This

If you really want to do that, the first thing to do is try to get on dedicated bike routes. Then, check all of your left turns on street view. Some of them might not be possible on a bike. I've ridden from the GWB to the Great Swamp which is similar to your first 30 miles. It's definitely not fun, and that area of NJ has a good amount truck traffic plus a lot of local traffic (e.g., groceries and soccer games).

I'd rather deal with Penn Station: Get a coffee and a bagel and chill for an hour or so on the train.

This is good advice. You coukd do worse than a train to Morristown and doing one of the old Gran Fondo routes like
https://ridewithgps.com/events/10064...y-gran-fondo-n

If you really want to start at the GWB, maybe you should go up to Bear Mtn and Harriman State Park instead, say on this route:

This is a one way trip type of a deal specially to the poconos, not a bear loop. Going to scope the trip to Morristown out and back in a few weeks and will report back.

I've ridden out from NYC to the Morristown or Denville area many times using a route like the one I posted (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39551189). I wouldn't call it scenic, but it's safe and I enjoy it much more than riding 9W.

I haven't looked carefully at your route, but I wouldn't want to ride the section of Mt. Pleasant Ave that crosses Eisenhower Parkway. There are much better options.

Scouting that route is a good idea.

Wondering how long you think this 1 way trip would take you? I am in western Morris County close to where the route passes and I can see that it could take longer than one might think.

I ride at the DWG often. I’ll take a look at the route and report back; but unfortunately there are a lot of junk miles to get out there.

As I said before, 611 is closed (the first road you turn onto once you're in PA that rides along the river). I'm not sure I'd risk trying it; a detour will take up a bunch of miles if you can't actually get through.

Thank you, missed your comment the first time around. Looks like closed indefinitely. I've driven this way through portland when avoiding gap traffic, what a shame.
