School me on full length top tube frame pumps
Are folks using them on more modern bikes?
My mini pocket pump doesn't seem to be inflating anymore and I had to limp home today. Been looking for a new pump, thought maybe a top tube pump might look kinda cool on my Cielo cross disc. Thoughts? I also have a older litespeed which has a dimple at the head tube.....do all frame pumps mount via compression (or expansion?). I do take the Cielo on quite a few gravel/ trail rides so the pump would need to be pretty secure. |

Frame pumps are the best.
Yes, I still use one almost all of the time. Yes, they are spring loaded in the handle. There are not too many options these days unfortunately though...

I have a zefal hpx (?) on a couple bikes and a silca (whatever is the expensive one). They’re both great, secure it to the bike with one of those jandd joints: https://www.jandd.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=FPT
For what it’s worth, the zefal has two modes (high pressure, high volume) and the Silca is press fit, no locking mechanism. |

I've used long ago versions of the Zefal HPX, and it was a good pump for sure. Now I use Silca Impero, also a great pump.
If the geometry of your bike (small) doesn't pinch the pump along the top tube, and there's no pump peg on the head tube, just use some velcro to hold it against the top tube near the head tube. You can use simple velcro from a craft or hardware store, or buy dedicated (right length) from a few cycling manufacturers, e.g. Silca. Not that you can't cut velcro, but... Whether or not a frame pump looks kinda cool on your Cielo will take a big back seat to when you actually need to use it. It'll pump a lot more per stroke than a mini pump in your jersey or attached with a bottle cage.

Thanks for the reminder, I forgot I had two frame pumps and have been throwing a Lezyne pump in my back pocket when I ride the Fierte.. time to put the Blackburn on!

Another full-length pump owner here. On ALL my bikes. Those short pumps are really just self-flagellating simulators, and all but useless for delivering air.
Zefal rules! (Looks like SKS owns them now, and they're no longer called Zefal. Check out the VX.) If you can get an older Zefal HPx, do it. If you don't want to use a strap to secure the pump under the top tube or don't have a pump peg, buy a longer pump and rest one end of the compressed pump at the head tube/down tube junction. On some bikes you can mount the pump between the seatstay/chainstay junction and the seatstay/seat tube junction.

My preferred method (even though I have a pump peg):

I have three Topeak frame pumps. They have never let me down so far.

I have gone back to using a full sized frame pump on a couple of my bikes. However, I have a couple of Cannondale AirSpeed LX pumps that work very well, but are considerably smaller and lighter than a full sized frame pump. Larger than a compact/mini pump with better inflation. I can get my road clinchers, like 25/28 mm, up to 80 psi with not that much effort. I can get them higher with more work, but 80 psi will get me home or to a shop. I carry a co2 cartridge, so the pumps only get used if that has already been exhausted.

Why do you have the pump backwards in this photo?
