Having owned a Solar Instinct, I'd guess that this is not solar charging, but more like 'solar prolonging'. The battery % will never go up in solar, but it will drain slower.

I just got an email about these. Solar charging in a bike computer is an interesting concept for sure; especially for multi day touring.

I’ll be anxiously awaiting DCrainmakers review on performance here.

It's a fabulous unit. The GUI is a complete change from what Garmin has in the -30 and earlier series. Oled screen.

None of this breaks the embargo because I didn't say it.

Early next month. I don't remember the exact date; it's on the shop email account and I'm not in today.

Interested for sure. Hate the plastic mounting ears on the back though. I had 3 1030s break. Installed the alloy dog ears and never had a problem since.

The tabs look different in the new one, perhaps metal this is from the 5K runner link above:

Oh, forgot, Elefantino: would anyone be able to guess whether the new Garmin units have plastic or metal tabs? )))

The only downside will be the possibility of regret that you didn't do it sooner.

810 and 820 were still in the bad old days, specifically prior to when they noticed Wahoo was selling a lot of units.

1030 and 830 were developed in a post-Wahoo world, and it shows.

The thing that may have metal tabs goes live tomorrow and it's way cool.

OLED would be surprising given lower brightness and probably more power draw than the transreflective stuff they use right now plus the possibility of burn-in on OLED.

However bike computer use does kind of lineup with OLED in that you could not send power to most of the pixels most of the time if everyone was cool with a white on black look.

OLED doesn't make as much sense if they are putting solar in as well.

Solar I think they could do well.. the existing units have quite a bit of bezel. For transreflective screens Garmin has two kinds of solar "layers" that they put in the stack. 1) Under the actual LCD 2) In the bezel and no-LCD parts. The 2nd part is more efficient.

But an Edge unit has a ton of space around the edges for Solar compared to a smartwatch so maybe it would work even with OLED if they just did a solar bezel.

The solar watches work pretty well, the bike computer ought to be pretty interesting.
