Semi-OT Amarillo, TX
Anyone been to Amarillo? If so, have you ridden out there? Long story as to why I'm asking, but just trying to get some feedback. Thnx

Flat as hell and almost always windy. Summer extremely hot, winter pretty darn cold.
Never lived or visited, I’ve only been through there a few dozen times. But it’s not a place I’d choose to spend a few days or weeks riding a bike......ever. |

Agree with everything Clancy pal said except....if you make a little detour to Palo Duro Canyon, there are some steep hills there you can use for hill repeats.

I’ve spent a lot of time in the area for work. I haven’t tried any road riding (cause flat and windy), but Palo Duro Canyon is really nice on a MTB, camping, hiking.

I spent a week in Amarillo one night when I was driving from Chicago to L.A.

Today I was sitting at a bar having lunch at a golf club I belong to. The only other people at the bar were a guy I know and his mother. She moved from San Diego to stay with her brother in Amarillo and said it was the biggest mistake she ever made in her life. That is why she is here in DFW now and is going to move here. Windy all of the time and too hot and too cold depending on the time of year.

It isn’t consistently cold like NE or Great Lakes but a Panhandle blizzard - winds in the 40s, blowing snow, ice everywhere- is pretty darn miserable.

not especially fond memories of my time spent in Amarillo...
was sent by my employer to conduct an environmental sampling program at the Pantex nuclear weapons assembly/decommissioning plant. a very charming place...at our project site, we had to walk on pathways made of 4 x 8' plywood sheets to avoid areas where 'bad things' were buried. always accompanied by not-overly-friendly guys in SWAT-esque attire. cold AF and the wind could really howl at times. never had time to get to Palo Duro, might have made the experience a little better. |

I had a layover there about a year and a half ago. Seemed flat and scrubby. It was hot and dry in July. We got a powerful west Texas thunderstorm that lasted about 10-15 minutes of very hard rain and then it was over.
Seemed pretty unremarkable but I was only there about 15 hours and then only in a hotel on the outskirts of town on a road lined with other boring hotels and chain restaurants, etc. |
